Free Tree Giveaway in Suffolk County Celebrates Earth Day and Energy Savings

In a commendable effort to honor Earth Day, PSEG Long Island, in conjunction with Suffolk County, the PSEG Foundation, and the Arbor Day Foundation, is offering a fantastic opportunity for residents of Suffolk County. The Energy-Saving Trees program will provide over 230 free trees to residents, demonstrating how strategically planted trees can significantly lower utility costs and enhance overall system reliability.

David Lyons, the interim president and COO of PSEG Long Island, emphasized the importance of Earth Day saying, "It’s a time for all of us to remember that we have a part to play in building a greener future." He noted that planting the right trees in optimal locations can result in energy savings of up to 20% on summer utility bills as the trees mature, while also contributing to improved air quality and reduced stormwater runoff.

The free trees will be available for reservation starting from April 14 through the website get.arborday.org/pseg, until supplies last. Residents can pick up their reserved trees on April 22 at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge between 9 AM and 12:30 PM. Those who do not reserve trees will have a chance to claim any remaining trees on a first-come, first-served basis after noon.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine stated, “We continue to identify opportunities to make Suffolk County environmentally sustainable. We encourage our residents to take part in the PSEG Long Island Energy Saving Trees program.” He noted that even a single tree can make a meaningful impact.

The event also serves as a platform for PSEG Long Island to share valuable information about energy-saving practices and financial assistance programs, furthering their commitment to community engagement and environmental sustainability. Attendees will not only leave with a free tree but will also receive reusable shopping bags and energy-efficient LED lightbulbs to help them save on both costs and environmental impact.

The types of trees available through this initiative include popular species such as red maple, river birch, scarlet oak, flowering dogwood, eastern red cedar, and sweetbay magnolia. Each resident who participates will be guided on the optimal placement of their selected tree to maximize energy efficiency, taking into consideration existing utilities and boundaries.

Additionally, on April 26, PSEG Long Island will host a similar event in Nassau County, allowing residents there to benefit from the same program. Pre-registration for Nassau residents will open on April 17, lasting until all trees are claimed, with pickup details provided on the reservation site.

Moreover, the company is participating in the RISE Earth Day event on May 3 in the Rockaways, where another 35 free trees will be available for community members on a first-come, first-served basis.

PSEG Long Island is also extending an exciting offer of free Google Nest smart thermostats to customers through their Online Marketplace until April 29, showcasing their commitment to energy conservation and modernization of home energy management. This aligns with their broader mission of giving back to the community through numerous local charitable initiatives, as outlined in their ongoing Community Partnership Program.

The Energy-Saving Trees initiative is just one example of how PSEG Long Island is fostering environmental stewardship while helping residents make informed choices that can lead to substantial long-term savings. This Earth Day event not only promotes tree planting but also instills a sense of community responsibility toward creating a greener future for all.
