Charichari Expands Bike Sharing Service Across Koto Ward in Tokyo

Charichari Expands Coverage in Koto Ward

Charichari, operated by Charichari Inc. based in Fukuoka, is expanding its bike-sharing service to cover the entirety of Koto Ward from April 1, 2026. This move aims to improve accessibility and address transportation needs between different parts of East Tokyo, including the bustling areas of Tokyo Bay and beyond.

Since its inception in February 2018, Charichari has emerged as an essential public transportation solution, amassing over 44 million rides. The service launched in Tokyo in September 2020, concentrating on areas like Taito and Sumida, where it worked alongside various stakeholders to install bike ports and enhance urban mobility. Buoyed by strong user demand, Charichari is now set to increase its operational area by approximately 2.4 times, expanding to 66.5 square kilometers to include Koto Ward.

Addressing Transportation Issues in Koto Ward

Koto Ward has long faced challenges with north-south transportation and the last-mile connectivity between subway stations. The new bike-sharing service will cover underserved areas such as Minamisuna and Shinjuku, which currently lack sufficient train access, as well as significant hubs like Toyosu and Ariake, the latter known for hosting large-scale events.

This expansion will not only streamline transportation across Koto Ward but also ease congestion during major events, enhancing the overall daily commute and travel experience for residents and visitors alike.

Collaboration with Tokyo United Basketball Club (TUBC)

A noteworthy feature of this expansion is the introduction of electric assist bikes designed with the team colors of the Tokyo United Basketball Club (TUBC), known as "UNITED BLUE." TUBC, based in Koto Ward and playing at Ariake Arena, aims to create a sense of community pride through this collaboration. Riders are encouraged to support TUBC by choosing the uniquely branded bikes available exclusively in the Tokyo area.

Transitioning to Full Implementation of Taito's Town Cycle Project

Charichari's journey in the Tokyo region has also included Taito Ward where, since September 2020, it has participated in a pilot project aimed at reducing bike parking and improving accessibility. With the positive outcomes observed, a full-scale launch is planned to coincide with the Koto Ward expansion on April 1, 2026. This will include formal agreements to maintain and support the ongoing services.

By replicating this collaborative model from Taito Ward across Koto Ward, Charichari aims to accelerate the development of sustainable urban transport infrastructure.

  • - Fuji Golf Center - 6-2-6 Kiba, Koto Ward
