FDK Corporation to Start Mass Production of PFAS-Free Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries
FDK Corporation, led by President Yoshiyuki Nagano, is set to commence the mass production of its PFAS-free nickel-metal hydride batteries, known as HR-3UTG and HR-4UTG, starting April 2026. This significant advancement comes after many years of dedication to developing environmentally friendly battery technology that meets the growing regulatory demands regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Product Overview
The HR-3UTG and HR-4UTG batteries are designed to be compatible with standard AA and AAA battery sizes, making them suitable for a variety of household and commercial applications. Users can seamlessly integrate these rechargeable batteries into devices that traditionally use disposable batteries, such as remote controls, flashlights, transceivers, and toys, including radio-controlled models.
For over 35 years, FDK has been manufacturing nickel-metal hydride batteries that offer unique features: they operate efficiently over a broad temperature range, are rechargeable and environmentally friendly, and boast high recyclability. The ability to recycle used batteries into valuable materials such as nickel and cobalt underscores FDK's commitment to sustainability.
Transitioning from PFAS
The increasing regulation of PFAS in consumer products cannot be overlooked. These substances have been widely used for their water and oil-repellent properties across various industries. However, their environmental persistence poses potential risks to human health and wildlife. PFAS have been critical to the performance and lifespan of secondary batteries, including those produced by FDK. In response to growing concerns, FDK's engineers embarked on a challenging development path to create a PFAS-free alternative. Their hard work paid off with the successful introduction of the HR-3UTG and HR-4UTG, which maintain comparable performance to existing products while utilizing new materials and manufacturing methods.
By reducing environmental impacts from production to disposal, FDK aims to contribute significantly to a sustainable society with its nickel-metal hydride batteries.
Manufacturing and Compliance
The HR-3UTG and HR-4UTG will be produced at FDK's high-quality Takasaki Factory, located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, which is certified under ISO9001 and ISO14001. Furthermore, the new batteries comply with various environmental regulations, including RoHS directives and the European Battery Regulation (2023/1542).
Future Commitment
As a Smart Energy Partner, FDK Corporation remains dedicated to leveraging innovative technologies to provide customers with efficient and safe electric energy solutions. The move towards PFAS-free batteries is a testament to their ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
