Long Island University Unveils Cutting-Edge AI² Center for Enhanced Education and Research

Long Island University Unveils AI² Center

Long Island University (LIU) has proudly announced the establishment of the AI² Center (Artificial Intelligence & Academic Innovation Center), a groundbreaking initiative designed to elevate the institution's commitment to education, research, and technological innovation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

The AI² Center is a university-wide project that aims to position LIU as a national frontrunner in AI education and workforce development. By combining academic excellence with practical applications, the center is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning across over 150 academic programs offered at the university.

The Vision for the AI² Center

As artificial intelligence continues its rapid evolution and integration into various sectors, LIU recognizes the need to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience they will need in a future shaped by AI technologies. To this end, the AI² Center will not only focus on AI-specific degrees, such as bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in Artificial Intelligence and the pioneering Bachelor of Engineering in Digital Engineering, but will also enhance existing programs across all fields to incorporate AI competencies.

A notable component of this initiative is the expansion of LIU's Artificial Intelligence Competency Distinction. This program, consisting of nine credits, provides students from diverse majors with foundational skills in AI that can be utilized in a range of careers, including healthcare, business, education, communications, science, and the arts. Students enrolled in the program will enjoy mentorship opportunities with postdoctoral fellows who specialize in AI, alongside access to state-of-the-art simulation and fabrication labs destined to inspire innovation.

A Closer Look at Leadership

The AI² Center is spearheaded by Dr. Mohammed Cherkaoui, LIU's Senior Vice President for Research and Artificial Intelligence, who is celebrated as one of the top 1% of scientists globally. Dr. Cherkaoui emphasizes that AI’s transformative impact is evident across various fields and illustrates the university's role in preparing students to become leaders within this evolving landscape. “Artificial intelligence transcends industry boundaries and reshapes how we live, work, and innovate. The AI² Center exemplifies our commitment to educating individuals who will thrive in this AI-driven world,” he stated.

Strategic partnerships also play a pivotal role in the AI² Center’s mission. The collaboration with Dassault Systèmes has resulted in the creation of the 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence at LIU, which focuses on advanced research and practical learning opportunities in fields such as precision medicine, digital engineering, and AI applications. This partnership significantly enhances the educational experience for students involved with the AI² Center.

Investments in Future Infrastructure

In alignment with the establishment of the AI² Center, LIU has made substantial investments in infrastructure intended to support AI and scientific discoveries for years to come. On the Post Campus, a new 40,000-square-foot science and innovation facility is under construction, destined to facilitate advanced research and interdisciplinary collaboration. On the Brooklyn Campus, cutting-edge laboratories dedicated to 3D design and simulation are now fully operational, further providing students with instrumental technological resources.

“LIU is at the forefront of AI transformation across higher education, research, and innovation,” said Dr. Kimberly Cline, President of Long Island University. “Through the AI² Center, we aim to prepare students across disciplines to thrive and lead in an economy that increasingly relies on artificial intelligence.”

As the AI² Center officially opens its doors, Long Island University not only strengthens its position as a leading institution in AI education and research but also commits to shaping the future of the workforce, ensuring students are ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by AI advancements.
