A Journey into Japanese Art: High-Definition Replicas in Fukushima
Canon, in collaboration with the city of Fukushima, is set to host a unique exhibition titled "High-Definition Replicas x Video Experience: National Treasures and Famous Works Come to Fukushima!" from April 18 to May 31, 2026, at the Hanano Photographic Museum (officially known as the Fukushima City Photography Museum). This exhibition will showcase seven national treasures and famous artworks recreated using advanced technology developed by the Tsuzuri Project, a joint initiative by Canon and the Kyoto Cultural Association. This event marks the second edition of the exhibition, following a successful run in 2023. The upcoming display will feature upgraded exhibits and video content, enhancing the overall experience for attendees.
Exhibition Highlights
1.
Showcase of National Treasures
The exhibition will feature high-definition replicas of seven notable works by six renowned Japanese painters, including Katsushika Hokusai and Ogata Korin. These masterpieces will be categorized into three thematic sections: "Confrontation of the Momoyama Period," "Masters of the Rinpa School," and "Ukiyo-e Artists of the Edo Period." Unlike original cultural properties, which are often housed in glass cases, this exhibition allows visitors to view the works up close and engage in photography, offering a unique and immersive experience. The high-definition replicas are created using Canon's cutting-edge digital imaging technology, faithfully reproducing the original artworks with precision.
2.
Diverse Multimedia Experiences
The exhibition will also include a variety of engaging video experiences. Attendees can enjoy projection mapping that brings to life the world depicted in the "Twelve Months of Flowers and Birds" series, participate in an interactive experience where they can become the "Beautiful Woman Turned Back" from a famous artwork, and immerse themselves in an immersive theater that re-creates the wall paintings of the Hojokaku at Tenkyuin, Kyoto. These video content experiences aim to make the allure of Japanese art more accessible and relatable to visitors, allowing them to connect with the culture on a deeper level.
