Join the Festive Picasso Art Workshop at Yokumoku Museum This December!

Celebrate the festive season with a unique artistic experience at the Yokumoku Museum.

On December 13th, 2025, the museum invites art enthusiasts and families to take part in a special Christmas edition of the popular workshop, "Picasso de Art: Paint on Unfired Ceramics!" This event aligns with the ongoing exhibition, "Picasso Ceramics: The Art of 'Mitate,'" where participants can engage with the essence of Picasso's creative genius.

A Journey Through Art

The workshop begins with a guided tour of the current exhibition, led by a dedicated curator focused on educational outreach, Kana Kobata. Attendees will immerse themselves in Picasso's world of ceramics, exploring the concept of 'mitate,' which involves reinterpreting objects in innovative ways. Participants will gaze upon the profound transformations in Picasso’s ceramic works, triggering their imaginations.

Hands-On Artistic Creation

After the exhibition tour, participants will have the unique opportunity to create their own artistic representations on bisque ceramics. The workshops are designed to provoke thought and encourage creativity, allowing each person to observe the individuality of their ceramic piece. They will explore textures and dimensions, searching for unique expressions that resonate with them, ultimately creating their personal interpretation of 'mitate.'

The ceramics used in this workshop are crafted by the talented Kanjitsu Araki, a renowned ceramist from Uji City, Kyoto. Having collaborated with designer Masaaki Hiromura on the museum's ceramic signage, Araki’s pieces are not only functional but also inspire creativity in workshops. Participants will freely paint on an assortment of ceramics, guiding their individual expression in this hands-on artistic pursuit.

The ongoing exhibition, "Picasso Ceramics: The Art of 'Mitate,'" runs from October 29, 2024, to December 28, 2025. This exhibition delves into how Picasso experimented with forms through his sculptures and ceramics, reinterpreting objects in a uniquely Japanese cultural context. By blending existing vases into dynamic shapes or viewing round plates as bullrings or faces, the exhibit highlights the humor in Picasso's creative process.
