Stena RoRo Makes Historic Order for Next-Gen C-Flexer RoRo Vessels

Stena RoRo is set to make a significant mark in maritime transport with its latest decision to order two firm C-Flexer RoRo vessels, along with options for four additional units. This historic move aligns with Stena RoRo's strategic vision for the future, aiming to provide flexible and sustainable RoRo ships that cater to the evolving demands of the global shipping industry. Developed in partnership with renowned Italian design firm, NAOS Ship and Boat Design, the C-Flexer vessels represent a leap forward in shipbuilding technology, combining years of maritime expertise with cutting-edge design standards.

Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo AB, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration: "Our extensive experience in the market, paired with NAOS's proficiency in designing fuel-efficient vessels, has enabled us to create ships that are not just appropriate for today but are also equipped for tomorrow's challenges." The first two C-Flexer vessels are due for delivery in March and June of 2029, marking a milestone in the timeline of Stena RoRo's advancements in ship design. Subsequently, the optioned vessels are expected to roll out at three-month intervals.

The construction of these vessels will take place at the China Merchants Industry (CMI) Weihai Shipyard. This partnership, which dates back to 2016, has resulted in a total of 17 vessels ordered, indicating a robust and successful working relationship. In the past, this collaboration delivered 12 RoPax vessels under the E-Flexer series, showcasing the ability to meet both domestic and international demand with impressive craftsmanship.

The C-Flexer vessels are engineered for versatility, featuring a highly refined hull form and advanced engine design. Their multi-fuel engines and scalable battery-hybrid systems mark a significant step toward greener shipping solutions. Westling states, "In the future, C-Flexer vessels will operate entirely on battery power, paving the way for environmentally-friendly operations. Until that time, the integrated diesel-battery hybrid system will offer necessary operational flexibility and reliability for years to come."

The technical specifications of the C-Flexer vessels reinforce their functionality. With a length of 200 meters, a beam of 31 meters, and a deadweight of approximately 15,000 tons, they will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 21 knots. The vessel configurations include both three-deck and four-deck versions, with lane meter capacities of 3,400 and 4,750 respectively, thereby optimizing their load flexibility for various transport needs.

Stena RoRo has been a pioneer in the development of RoRo cargo and passenger transport solutions since 1977. With a focus on customized vessels that meet the specific requirements of operators, the company has leased about 15 vessels globally. Their approach named 'Stenability' emphasizes their commitment to technical excellence, value-added design, and sustainable operational practices. Out of the total orders, 12 RoPax ships from the E-Flexer class and two NewMax RoRo ships have already been delivered, enhancing their presence in the international shipping arena.

Beyond commercial vessels, Stena RoRo has also made strides in humanitarian endeavors, most notably designing and constructing the world's largest civilian hospital ship, the Global Mercy, which began operations in 2021 under the auspices of Mercy Ships. This evolution demonstrates Stena RoRo's commitment not only to transportation but also to social responsibility.

With a significant order like the C-Flexer vessels, Stena RoRo shows its intent to lead the future of maritime transport, reinforcing its reputation as an innovator focused on sustainability, efficiency, and customer-oriented solutions. As the shipping industry navigates towards greener technology and adaptable vessel designs, Stena RoRo stands at the forefront, ready to meet the future head-on.
