Altair and JetZero Join Forces to Advance Aerospace Innovation

Altair and JetZero Collaborate for Aerospace Innovation

In a groundbreaking partnership, Altair Engineering, a leader in computational science and AI based in Michigan, USA, has teamed up with JetZero, a pioneer in developing the world’s first commercial blended-wing aircraft. This collaboration aims to advance the next generation of aerospace technology, promising improved fuel efficiency, extended range, and innovative aerodynamic design compared to traditional passenger planes.

JetZero estimates that their blended-wing design could achieve up to a 50% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, leveraging Altair's premium simulation and design platform, Altair® FlightStream™, which integrates advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. This partnership not only aims to shorten the time to market but also reduces computational costs significantly.

Achievements Through the Partnership

Altair's solutions empower JetZero to conduct high-fidelity CFD simulations effectively, bridging the gap between engineering challenges regarding aerodynamic and structural concepts. Their partnership allows for expedited and efficient problem-solving capabilities, often surpassing other solvers in speed and effectiveness.

A key feature of FlightStream is its unmatched computational speed and minimal hardware footprint. Combined with a streamlined user interface and robust aerodynamic solvers, it becomes an essential tool for rapid iterations and detailed aerodynamic research during the design's early phases.

JetZero is also a member of the Altair Aerospace Startup Acceleration Program (ASAP), which provides them access to Altair's extensive portfolio of simulation, data analytics, and AI tools, enabling cost-effective and flexible solutions.

About the Blended-Wing Design

The blended-wing aircraft differs from traditional tube-and-wing configurations by seamlessly merging the wing with the fuselage, generating lift across all surfaces and minimizing drag. This design not only expands cabin space, enhancing passenger comfort, but also maximizes cargo capacity for freight applications. The structural efficiency of the blended-wing design reduces both aircraft weight and noise. As engines are mounted at the upper rear of the aircraft, engine noise during takeoff and landing is directed upwards, alleviating noise around airport areas. The first flight of JetZero’s aircraft, scheduled for 2027, promises to demonstrate this innovative design.

Endorsements from Key Leaders

Pietro Cervellera, Altair's Senior Vice President of Aerospace and Defense, expressed enthusiasm for JetZero's vision of transforming the aerospace industry into a more efficient and sustainable sector through the use of Altair's simulation and AI technologies. He emphasizes that the capabilities of Altair's technology portfolio are unparalleled in accelerating designs, simplifying complexities, and expanding industry limits.

Tom O’Leary, Co-Founder and CEO of JetZero, highlights that the integration of Altair’s technology is crucial for achieving JetZero's mission—a groundbreaking leap in the aviation industry since the dawn of jet age. By utilizing tools such as FlightStream, JetZero's team can perform transformative simulations more efficiently, paving the way for the upcoming Z4 aircraft that embodies the future of aviation.

About JetZero

JetZero is focused on developing the world's first blended-wing aircraft, promising to cut fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to existing commercial aircraft. The Z4 aircraft designed by JetZero is aimed at the much-needed mid-market segment, accommodating 200 to 290 passengers and offering a range of 5,000 nautical miles while significantly reducing carbon emissions. Collaborating with the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and the FAA, JetZero aims to commence commercial operations by 2030, supported by decades of research and investment in blended-wing technology.
