Keio University Lacrosse Club Hosts Seminar on Careers in Shipping Industry

Insights from the Shipping Industry: A Seminar at Keio University

On April 13, 2026, Keio University’s Hiyoshi campus served as the venue for a corporate seminar specifically tailored for the university's Lacrosse Club, which consists of both male and female members. The event attracted about 100 students eager to explore the shipping industry’s societal roles, the value of work, and how to shape their careers.

This seminar is part of an initiative following a sponsorship agreement formed in October 2025 between the university and Kuribayashi Shoji Co. It aims not only to provide sponsorship support but also to foster ongoing relationships with students and offer career guidance.

During the seminar, three representatives from Kuribayashi took the stage, including Executive Officer Yoshiyuki Kuribayashi, who is also an alumnus of the Lacrosse Club. They shared personal experiences as they discussed the significance and appeal of the shipping industry, as well as how their experiences during their college years have influenced their careers.

Purpose and Goals of the Seminar

The seminar kicked off with a discussion aimed at defining fundamental concepts such as “What is business?” and “What is the shipping industry?” It highlighted the shipping industry’s critical role in supporting Japan’s imports and exports while emphasizing its status as a lesser-known sector for students.

Through this initiative, Kuribayashi sought to provide students with insights into society and employment, encouraging them to contemplate their future while strengthening their understanding of the shipping industry.

Alumni Perspectives on Sports and Work Ethics

Yoshiyuki Kuribayashi's keynote address delved into how his experiences in the Lacrosse Club have shaped his approach to work, stressing the importance of teamwork and individual roles. As he shared nostalgic photographs from his time as a student, the audience reacted with surprise and camaraderie, creating a sense of unity among current members.

Moreover, Kuribayashi discussed the importance of preparing for the future while being dedicated to sports, conveying a vital message about how the time spent now, including job hunting, will significantly impact their future. The students listened intently, reflecting on their own situations.

Young Employees on Real Career Insights

Following the senior's address, young employees from Kuribayashi shared their career journeys, focusing on their experiences from student life to their current roles. They candidly described their perspectives on job hunting and the fulfillment of work, emphasizing how their student experiences have come into play in their professional lives.

One thought-provoking question posed was, “If I could return to being a student, what would I prioritize?” This particular insight resonated strongly with the attending students, compelling even the younger members of the Lacrosse Club to think about their futures. After the seminar, students actively engaged by asking questions related to job responsibilities and employment processes, showcasing their interest in exploring future opportunities.

Future Initiatives and Prospects

Feedback from the university indicated that the seminar was a significant opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of society and business, paving the way for future careers.

The initiative enriches sponsorship activities while enhancing relationships with students. Furthermore, it fosters new roles for alumni and young employees as storytellers. Kuribayashi plans to continue building these connections through similar initiatives, aiming to enhance corporate understanding and develop future team members. By linking sponsorship with talent development and recruitment, the company is committed to creating new touchpoints with students.
