In a remarkable gesture of gratitude, the PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes recently sponsored a historic Honor Flight, bringing distinguished veterans from Puerto Rico to Washington, D.C. This special flight, dedicated to Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, was not just a journey through the skies but a heartfelt tribute to their legendary service and sacrifice.

From June 12 to June 14, the veterans traveled from San Juan to the nation’s capital to visit various monuments and memorials that stand as a testament to their gallantry. The initiative was executed in partnership with the Honor Flight Network's Lone Eagle Hub, which aims to connect veterans with the recognition they deserve.

A Force of Dedication
James Schenck, President and CEO of PenFed Credit Union and the PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes, emphasized the foundation’s commitment to serving the veteran community. He stated, "This Honor Flight is a powerful continuation of our commitment to the veteran community in Puerto Rico. The weekend was filled with emotions, camaraderie, and honor as veterans reunited with their peers and reflected on shared histories. The return flight was particularly festive, greeted enthusiastically by family members, volunteers, and representatives from several supporting organizations, all showing their appreciation for the veterans' sacrifices.

Celebrating Legacy
Among those honored was 100-year-old Korean War veteran Casildo Rodriguez, who received the prestigious Ambassador for Peace Medal from South Korea during the trip. Also present was Magda Caquias, one of the first women to serve in the U.S. Army Military Police, who has left an indelible mark on military history, especially around the time she served in Korea in the early 1970s. Together, they exemplified the gallantry and dedication that Puerto Rican veterans have consistently exhibited throughout American history.

Participants like Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Rivera Jr., a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, shared poignant narratives of their wartime experiences. Rivera articulated the powerful emotions he encountered during his visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where he honored a fallen comrade: "I leave with a heart full of gratitude for the warm welcome and applause from everyone we met during our visit. This has been an incredible journey because I was able to meet fellow Puerto Rican veterans and share our stories." His heartfelt remarks underscored why such trips are essential—to foster recognition among veterans who often feel underappreciated in society.
