Experience the Creative World of Japanese Eyewear
The vibrant and innovative field of eyewear design is set to shine this September with the collaborative trunk show of two exceptional Japanese eyewear brands,
Filton and
Serenite. From
September 12 to 23, 2026, at the elegant setting of
Ginza Mitsumedo, attendees will have a chance to explore the artistry and craftsmanship behind these unique collections, marking a significant milestone in the evolving landscape of eyewear.
Introducing Filton
Filton was established in December 2021 by designer
Takuya Tanabe, whose name is already becoming synonymous with avant-garde eyewear. The brand's name cleverly combines the French words for thread "
Fil" and button "
bouton", reflecting its core philosophy. Tanabe's expertise in art and fashion greatly influences his designs, resulting in frames that embody the concept of 'Collage'—the artistic technique of integrating various materials like acetate, needles, buttons, titanium, and zippers.
Some notable creations from Filton include:
- - Aiguille (AG): This collection draws inspiration from vintage French frames, featuring a bold acetate front and innovative temple designs modeled after sewing needles. The incorporation of a classic craftsmanship technique known as "shinpuri" adds a unique texture to each pair.
- - Fermeture à glissière (FE): Merging eyewear with clothing elements, this playful yet functional collection showcases zippers across the frames and temples, creating a dynamic visual accent while maintaining a lightweight feel using titanium materials.
- - Mesure: Known for its eye-catching combination of sheets of titanium with printed measuring tape motifs, this collection stands out for its contrasting textures and subtle individuality.
Discovering Serenite
Contrasting with Filton’s established narrative is
Serenite, a newly emerged eyewear brand founded in 2023, shrouded in mystery with an undisclosed designer. Named after the transparent gypsum mineral, Serenite's models feature names inspired by heroes and deities from ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology. Each piece in their collection is limited to just 200 units and showcases meticulous handcrafted details that render them unique.
Noteworthy models from Serenite include:
- - Venus: This piece pays homage to the beauty of art and truth, featuring a nose pad inscribed with Debussy’s famous quote, linking art with emotion.
- - Ammon: Utilizing a blend of traditional materials like celluloid and the highest-grade titanium, this collection captures the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship
