Anko Adventure Returns: Izumo City to Host Local Sweet Stamp Rally

The Izumo Anko Journey Returns!

The Japan Anko Association, based in Toshima, Tokyo, is excited to announce the second edition of the stamp rally event titled 'Izumo Anko Journey 2: Hirata and Hikawa Edition.' This event will take place in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, from October 1, 2025, until November 30, 2025. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into a delightful exploration of 16 different local anko sweets from various shops, including wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and洋菓子 (Western-style cakes), as well as bakeries and dining establishments across the city.

What is the Izumo Anko Journey?

The Izumo Anko Journey is a unique stamp rally event designed to encourage attendees to explore the local sweets scene in and around Izumo City. Following the success of last year's event, which focused solely on the Hirata district, this year's adventure will expand to include the Hikawa area, allowing participants to savor a wider array of anko treats.

The event is organized by the Izumo Confectionery Association, alongside the Hirata Confectionery Association, with expert guidance from the Japan Anko Association. Running from October to November, the event promises a sweet escapade that not only highlights local delicacies but also fosters community engagement.

Experience 'Anko Musubi'

The theme of this year's rally, 'Anko Musubi,' embodies the spirit of connecting people through the enjoyment of anko. Historically, anko has been more than a mere sweet; it has served as a social lubricant for gatherings, from tea ceremonies in ancient times to contemporary dining experiences. Through this journey, we aim to bring participants closer to not only delicious treats but also to the warmth and friendliness of the local community. We believe that these encounters are what truly symbolize 'Musubi' (connection) among people.

Connecting People and Places

Beyond individual connections, the event will highlight the unique features of Izumo's local community. The sweets often showcase regional ingredients and historical narratives that are tied to the area. By indulging in these local delicacies, participants will gain insights that could inspire future visits or even potential relocations. Anko serves as a gateway to understanding the diverse stories and attractions of the region.

Additionally, the event bridges the connection between neighboring urban areas, specifically the Hirata and Hikawa districts. Working collaboratively, the two areas can create tourist routes that are more appealing than they would be individually. The Japan Anko Association envisions promoting local development through such community events, fostering greater network connections across regions.

What’s Special About Hirata and Hikawa?

Last year’s event focused exclusively on the historical and cultural aspects of the Hirata area. This year, Hikawa joins the festivities, known for its famous 'Yunokawa Onsen,' revered as one of Japan's three most beautiful hot springs. Combining relaxation from the hot springs with the healthy benefits of anko sweets offers participants a wellness experience few other areas can provide. Come and enjoy a taste of harmony as you unwind and indulge!

Meet the 'An Ambassador'

The 'Hirata-Hikawa An Ambassador' title recognizes individuals passionate about anko and knowledgeable about the specific sweets in the Hirata and Hikawa regions. Participants can earn this honorary title by sampling and finishing sweets at all 16 participating shops. Each purchase grants entry into a special program where they will acquire a unique card featuring quiz questions related to anko and its cultural significance. Collect all 16 cards to assert your status as an anko master in the local community!
