Understanding the Challenges in the Trucking Industry
Fleetworthy has recently released its 2025 Trucking and Fleet Insights Report, shedding light on the major hurdles that trucking companies and owner-operators encounter today. This comprehensive survey collected insights from 300 employees across large trucking companies with more than 500 vehicles and midsize firms operating between 50 and 500 vehicles, alongside single-truck owner-operators.
The report highlights how compliance, safety, and operational efficiency are increasingly becoming pain points in the trucking industry. Based on survey responses, it was discovered that rising costs associated with compliance and administrative tasks are significantly hampering the operations of these fleets.
One striking finding from the report shows that 96% of participants had to cut costs in other areas of their business to accommodate the increasing expenses linked to compliance over the past 12 months. Additionally, a staggering 93% articulated challenges related to toll management, citing frustrations with multiple toll transponders and unpredictable toll costs.
Alarming data reveals that approximately 35% of owner-operators are contemplating shutting their operations due to escalating costs and the burdensome time commitments required for compliance management. Michael Precia, the President and Chief Strategy Officer at Fleetworthy, commented on the situation, explaining that the constant evolution of regulations places an immense financial and logistical strain on fleets. Precia notes that the substantial investment in time and resources for compliance can stifle business growth, with a remarkable 95% of respondents confirming that compliance concerns hinder their capacity to expand operations and introduce new services.
Furthermore, the report brings to light the looming threat of nuclear verdicts—excessive penalties following accidents that can significantly impact smaller and midsize trucking companies due to their limited resources for maintaining comprehensive compliance and safety practices. Within the surveyed cohort, 35% of midsize fleet leaders expressed profound concerns about the potential of nuclear verdicts affecting their operations.
Despite the fears surrounding legal repercussions, a positive outlook emerges from the data: 93% of fleet leaders believe their organizations cultivate a strong safety culture and are well-versed in Department of Transportation regulations. Interestingly, 97% of owner-operators feel they possess superior knowledge of safety and compliance practices as compared to their peers.
To bolster fleet and driver safety, the report shows that a significant majority—96%—have invested in safety equipment within the last year. Among the most popular upgrades are in-cab cameras and monitoring systems, with 51% of respondents incorporating such technology into their operations. This illustrates a proactive approach to enhancing safety amidst challenging circumstances.
