Shanghai Electric Enhances Energy Future in Iraq
Shanghai Electric has launched a crucial project aimed at upgrading the Euphrates Combined Cycle power plants in Iraq. This initiative is designed to combat the longstanding electricity shortages faced by the country, aiming to boost overall capacity by an impressive 625 megawatts (MW). The upgrade is set to increase the efficiency of the power plants by approximately 50%, generating an additional 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually without a rise in fuel consumption.

Iraq, one of the Middle East's notable oil producers, has struggled with severe electricity deficits for over three decades. Many of its power plants are reliant on natural gas, but domestic gas production has lagged significantly, leading to an increased dependency on imports. Project Overview
The Euphrates project will take place across four Iraqi provinces: Najaf, Karbala, Babylon, and Qadisiyyah. The upgrade involves transforming simple-cycle units into combined-cycle systems, which make more efficient use of existing resources. By redirecting high-temperature exhaust gases from existing gas turbines to heat recovery steam generators, the project will create additional steam that drives a new steam turbine for increased power output.
Chinese and Iraqi teams are working collaboratively on the construction, which has already garnered substantial attention from both the Iraqi government and its citizens. Ziad Ali Fadel, Iraq's Electricity Minister, emphasized the strategic importance of this endeavor, highlighting its potential to optimize the country's electrical infrastructure and reduce reliance on imported natural gas, thereby lowering electricity generation costs.

The modernization at the Najaf facility will utilize high-temperature exhaust gases as a heat source. This state-of-the-art approach not only boosts capacity but also minimizes thermal pollution from the original power units. "Chinese equipment and energy technologies enable us to recycle high-temperature exhaust gases, thus enhancing output while simultaneously reducing thermal waste," says Naseem Ayad, the project's Iraqi manager in Najaf.
In Karbala, core components such as heat recovery steam generators and air-cooled condensers have already been installed. This aspect of the project marks a significant evolution towards utilizing Chinese standards and equipment in Iraq's energy sector.
