UPDATER Sells Agrivoltaic Solar Power Plant in Fukushima to TBS GX Group

UPDATER's Significant Sale to TBS GX

In a move towards sustainable energy practices, UPDATER, headquartered in Setagaya, Tokyo, has finalized the sale of an agrivoltaic solar power facility located in Yabuki, Fukushima Prefecture, to TBS Group's GX company, TBS Green Transformation (TBS GX). This agreement, which includes a sale contract for power generation equipment, was established in February 2026.

The renewable energy produced by this solar facility will, starting June 2026, supply power to TBS Group's content production base at Midoriyama Studio through UPDATER's renewable retail electricity service, 'Minna Denryoku'. Notably, UPDATER will continue to manage the facility even after the sale, ensuring ongoing oversight and maintenance.

This transaction marks the third power plant that UPDATER has provided to TBS GX, which reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to collaborate on innovative energy solutions.

A Unique Renewable Energy Model

The solar power station sold was developed in partnership with local stakeholders since 2022. UPDATER collaborated with Green System Corporation, a company specializing in agrivoltaic systems across Fukushima and Tochigi Prefectures, to create a facility designed to coexist with farming. This site has transformed previously abandoned agricultural land into a productive space, where grass is grown below solar panels, creating a symbiotic relationship with livestock partners like Agroecology Co.

This innovative model allows for the simultaneous cultivation of crops and rearing of livestock, establishing a circular economy in agricultural and renewable energy sectors. Underpinned by animal welfare principles, the facility promotes an environment where cattle can roam freely, aligning with sustainable land use goals.

Additionally, advanced AI technology has been introduced for heat detection in the cattle, enhancing breeding efficiency by preventing missed heat signals and improving conception rates. Combining pasture conditions with AI-driven data management is paving the way for a new era of livestock farming focused on animal health and sustainable breeding practices.

Through building trust and collaboration with agricultural partners and local stakeholders, UPDATER successfully facilitated the acquisition of this power generation facility by TBS GX. By leveraging this plant as a source of renewable energy, UPDATER aims to highlight the compelling stories behind energy generation while fostering partnerships that support ecological balance in the community.

The Importance of Storytelling in Energy Procurement

As the adoption of renewable energy increases, concerns about the environmental impacts of large-scale solar developments and community relations have emerged as significant social issues. Companies are no longer merely securing electricity but are also prioritizing the sustainability and visibility of their energy procurement. This trend is encouraging organizations to select plants that harmonize with local environments and communities.

With growing geopolitical risks and fluctuations in fuel prices contributing to increased volatility in electricity markets, companies are moving towards securing stable power sources and long-term contracts to mitigate business risks.

UPDATER is actively addressing these needs through its development and planning initiatives in the 'Minna Power' project, aiming to create customized power plants that align with corporate values and sustainability strategies. This bespoke approach is akin to designing tailored homes, resulting in power generation plants with rich narratives.

Future Prospects: The Coexistence Renewable Energy Project

In September 2025, UPDATER launched the 'Coexistence Renewable Energy Project 10' (CoEne PRJ), following the recognition of agricultural land in Toyooka City, Hyogo, as Japan's first Nature Coexistence Site. This project aims to establish a model of power plants that coexist with nature and communities.

As Japan's electricity demand is projected to rise due to increased data centers and semiconductor factories, the emphasis on how power generation interacts positively with natural ecosystems and societal needs is gaining traction in energy sourcing decisions.

However, clear standards for 'nature and community-coexisting power plants' are still lacking. UPDATER is working on developing these standards through practical implementations and data accumulation.

The project outlines plans to establish ten nature and community-coexisting facilities by 2028, with three plant compositions already underway. Through such initiatives, UPDATER aims to create a standard model that differentiates its offerings in the corporate energy market.
