The First eSports GOMI Event in Okayama
On May 30, 2026, Okayama hosted its inaugural
eSports GOMI event. This unique initiative, organized by
Hitomee Inc. and run by the eSports GOMI organizing committee, aimed to combine the excitement of eSports with an ecological mission to clean up the community.
Four teams, each consisting of three members, participated in this competitive clean-up challenge held at
Grop Sanserite in Okayama City. Participants had a limited time to collect as much litter as possible, with points awarded based on the amount and type of garbage collected.
The eSports GOMI concept merges two critical activities: raising awareness about global marine waste issues through competitive gaming and encouraging community service through collective clean-up efforts. This environmental event draws in participants of all ages, making it a family-friendly activity that promotes teamwork and responsibility towards the environment.
Hitomee’s initiative aligns with its mission to provide localized employment support and community revitalization, aiming to transform the way work is approached in rural areas of Japan. By hosting this event in Okayama, the company sought to foster local engagement and enhance collaboration within the community.
On the day of the event, participants enthusiastically strategized and scoured the area for litter, showcasing their competitive spirit and camaraderie. The half-time offered a gaming tournament featuring
Puyo Puyo eSports, allowing participants to unwind and shift focus momentarily. This created an atmosphere of fun, with
Team HC coming out on top in this game segment, setting the stage for the second half of the clean-up.
The culmination of the event witnessed
Grop Sanserite crowned the victor, having collected an impressive 8.265 kg of litter with a score of 867 points. Following them was
Team HC in second place, gathering 1.180 kg and accumulating 534 points, while
Takkisan claimed third with 1.105 kg and 255 points. Altogether, a total of 10.55 kg of waste was collected by all teams, highlighting the efforts toward making the community cleaner and more beautiful.
The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with both competitive tension and lighthearted fun, as participants shared smiles and experiences throughout the day. The success of Grop Sanserite was celebrated as they shared their insights on finding a variety of litter along roadways, including broken flower pots and various recyclables.
The event also served an essential purpose—Fostering community connections and encouraging participants to think about local environmental issues. Speakers from Hitomee expressed their gratitude towards all participants, sponsors, and volunteers who made the event possible, emphasizing the need for community involvement in addressing local challenges.
As the representative of Hitomee, Shogo Takikawa, spoke passionately about the event’s significance, he reflected on how collaborative efforts like this one can lead to meaningful change. He highlighted the transformative power of eSports, not just as a form of entertainment but as a catalyst for community building and environmental awareness.
The collaboration of various supporting companies showcased their commitment to regional development and environmental sustainability, reinforcing the idea that everyone can contribute to creating a better living space.
The clear skies on the day of the event acted as a perfect backdrop for a day of competition, teamwork, and community service. Participants were encouraged to think about their actions and the impact they have on the environment, contributing to the overall culture of actively caring for their locality.
In conclusion, the
eSports GOMI in Okayama proved to be a tremendous success, providing entertainment while fostering environmental consciousness. This unique blend of gaming and social responsibility is a model that can inspire other regions to implement similar initiatives, paving the way for a cleaner, more engaged society.
