The Visual Delights of the Sanno Festival at the National Archives



The National Archives of Japan, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is hosting an exciting exhibition titled "Wasshoi! Tenkamatsuri - Enjoy Edo Castle and the Sanno Festival Visually" until June 20, 2023. This event is part of the Edo Tokyo Campaign 2026 Spring initiative by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aimed at promoting the rich cultural heritage of Edo.

Exhibition Details



The exhibition runs from June 9 (Tuesday) to June 20 (Saturday), with operating hours from 9:15 AM to 5 PM. Please note that the gallery will be closed on June 15 (Monday). Admission is free and no prior reservation is required.

The venue for the exhibition is the 1st floor exhibition hall of the National Archives, located at _3-2, Kitanomaru Park, Chiyoda, Tokyo_. The location is easily accessible, with a 5-minute walk from the Takebashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line.

What to Expect at the Exhibition



The show’s theme is designed to offer visitors a visually engaging experience. It features a variety of historical materials, including colorful illustrated maps of Edo Castle and illustrated books that depict the lively atmosphere of the Sanno Festival. In addition to these visual delights, the exhibition includes rare original documents such as the _Gojikki_, the official history of the shogunate, and the important cultural property, _Kobunroku_, from the Meiji government. These materials are seldom seen by the public, making this a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Gallery Talks



To enhance the experience, the National Archives is organizing gallery talks on various dates: June 10 (Wednesday), June 12 (Friday), June 16 (Tuesday), and June 18 (Thursday). Each talk will commence at 2:30 PM and last around 15 minutes. Participation is free, and no registration is required. Visitors are encouraged to gather near the entrance on the first floor to join the talk.

Shuttle Bus Service



In addition, a free shuttle bus service will operate from June 12 (Friday) to June 14 (Sunday), connecting the Chiyoda and Sumida areas. This shuttle is perfect for weekend excursions, with routes linking the Marunouchi Building, the National Archives, the Sumida Hokusai Museum, and the Edo Tokyo Museum.

The first bus will depart from the Marunouchi Building at 9:30 AM, operating at 20-minute intervals, with the last return trip scheduled for 6:00 PM at the Marunouchi Building (expected timing).
