More Perfect Launches "Conversations on Character"
In light of rising concerns regarding the weakening of core values among Americans,
More Perfect, a collective of 37 Presidential Centers and over 100 civic partners, has recently initiated a nationwide dialogue titled
Conversations on Character. This series of public events is designed to encourage introspection on both personal and national character. The commencement of this initiative aligns with the anticipated release of General (Ret.)
Stanley McChrystal's new book,
On Character, scheduled for May 13, which aims to explore the lessons learned throughout his distinguished military career, emphasizing the discipline needed to align with one’s beliefs.
General McChrystal's book serves not only as a reflection of his experiences but as a beacon urging Americans to consider how their choices resonate with their values and, collectively, how these decisions forge the character of the nation. According to a recent Ipsos survey carried out for the Medal of Honor Foundation, 87% of respondents believe stronger values would benefit the country, and a staggering 82% feel that American society today is less grounded in values compared to previous generations. Moreover, 90% affirm that integrity, commitment, citizenship, and courage exemplify essential values in life.
In a thought-provoking op-ed for the New York Times, General McChrystal underscored the necessity of confronting fears with courage to fortify our national character. He eloquently stated, "The strength of our character is not defined by the absence of fear but by our ability to face it, to rise above it, and to live and lead with integrity." He elaborated that overcoming fear isn’t merely about defeating it; it involves upholding the principles that govern our actions and emotions.
The inaugural event for the
Conversations on Character series will feature General McChrystal at
George Washington’s Mount Vernon on May 29, 2025. This event, along with others hosted by the
Adams Presidential Center and various Presidential Centers across the nation, aims to tackle vital themes like resilience in the face of failure, deep personal reflection, conviction, discipline, service, sacrifice, and leaving a legacy that transcends mere titles or accolades.
John Bridgeland, CEO of More Perfect, expressed how McChrystal's book inspired him to introspectively evaluate how his actions mirror his values. "It is crucial to have a 'Constitutional character' that underpins our freedoms and principles," he remarked. For those keen on delving deeper into the text, history, and significance of the U.S. Constitution, the
Interactive Constitution on the
National Constitution Center's website provides valuable resources. Additionally, General McChrystal’s book will be available for purchase at the series’ events.
As America approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, General McChrystal emphasized the importance of reflecting on the character that defines the nation. Through these conversations, the aim is to inspire citizens to evaluate their values and contribute positively to the pursuit of a more unified and exemplary nation.
More Perfect envisions this initiative motivating leaders from various sectors to partake in these meaningful dialogues on character, helping to bridge divides and enhance trust across communities. To explore details concerning the
