Judge John D. Bates Receives Distinguished Honor
On the evening of October 16, 2025, a notable ceremony was held at the Supreme Court of the United States, marking the 41st Annual Devitt Award presented by the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation. The event, steeped in tradition and dignified presence, celebrated the achievements of Senior United States District Judge John Deacon Bates, who was awarded the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.
The award, established by the late Dwight D. Opperman in 1982, aims to recognize judges who have made extraordinary contributions to justice and uphold the integrity of the judiciary. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. opened the ceremony, emphasizing Judge Bates's exemplary service and leadership within the American judicial framework.
Judge Bates, a dedicated public servant, has a long history of significant contributions to the judiciary since his appointment to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2001. His roles have included directing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and leading various committees within the Judicial Conference. Such leadership has solidified his reputation as a model trial judge, showcasing a commitment to justice and ethical governance in all his endeavors.
During the award presentation, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who chaired the selection committee, highlighted Judge Bates's impact on the judiciary. She noted, "In each role you have undertaken, you have strengthened the judiciary through your sound judgement and principled leadership." The Chief Justice echoed her sentiments, affirming Judge Bates as a deserving recipient who embodied the qualities of distinction and honor that the Devitt Award represents.
Having served in vital governmental roles prior to his judicial career, including military service and legal counsel in various capacities, Judge Bates has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the nation. As Chief Justice Roberts remarked, Judge Bates has consistently embraced additional responsibilities alongside an already demanding caseload, exhibiting enthusiasm and exceptional competence throughout his career.
As he accepted the award, Judge Bates expressed gratitude, indicating that previous recipients of the Devitt Award are paragons of the judicial branch. His words reflected humility and an awareness of the legacy of excellence represented by the award, a sentiment echoed by Matthew Umhofer, the President of the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation. Umhofer acknowledged Judge Bates's commitment to democracy and justice, reflecting on the foundational beliefs of Opperman himself.
Following the formal ceremony held in the Courtroom, a reception took place in the East and West Conference Rooms, culminating in a formal dinner that brought together a select group of over 100 distinguished guests from the legal community as well as prominent figures from Washington. The event featured a performance by Luke Fraiser's American Pops Orchestra, adding a celebratory touch to the night’s proceedings.
The Devitt Award stands as a symbol of dedication to the judiciary, aiming to highlight the essential role played by judges in maintaining the rule of law and advocating for justice. Judge John D. Bates's recognition through this prestigious award reaffirms the honor bestowed upon those who tirelessly commit themselves to upholding the values they represent within the justice system.
