As ongoing price hikes continue to strain household budgets, both Chikuwa and Kanikama have seen increased interest, with searches rising 1.8 times compared to 2015.

Price Surge in Fresh Seafood

The price of fresh seafood has seen substantial increases over the past decade. For instance, the price of salmon has jumped from ¥282 in 2015 to ¥521 in 2024, representing an approximate 85% hike. Similarly, squid prices have risen by 163% during the same period. While chicken prices have only seen an 11% increase, Chikuwa has managed to maintain a lower price point, now averaging ¥133 in early 2025, making it an appealing protein source for budget-conscious consumers.
