World Vision Launches Innovative Tool to Measure Children's Experience of God's Love

Understanding God's Love Through Children

World Vision, a renowned Christian humanitarian organization, has recently introduced a pioneering initiative called the Hope & Love Measure. This validated tool signifies a monumental leap in understanding how children around the world perceive and experience God's love. With over 75 years of experience supporting vulnerable populations, World Vision emphasizes that children are not mere recipients of care but active contributors to their communities, embodying moral and spiritual beings who thrive on love and hope.

The Development of the Hope & Love Measure

Crafted in collaboration with experts from prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, Duke University, and Claremont Graduate University, this tool emerged from a comprehensive global study. Researchers engaged with 658 children across varied countries including Albania, Bolivia, Iraq, and Uganda. The initiative seeks to understand how children interpret the love they receive from families and communities, laying the groundwork for stronger support systems aimed at nurturing their emotional and spiritual welfare.

Edgar Sandoval Sr., the President and CEO of World Vision, shared, “The Hope & Love Measure scientifically validates our long-held belief that experiencing the love of Jesus makes a significant difference in children's lives.” The findings reveal that children’s sense of love—particularly the unconditional love experienced through caring relationships—correlates strongly with measurable levels of hope, resilience, and overall well-being.

The Six Signs of Hope

The innovative tool identifies six essential signs that reflect a child's spiritual flourishing:

1. Compassion: A child who feels hopeful exhibits empathy and kindness, both towards others and in receiving kindness.
2. Purpose: Hopeful children engage actively in their communities, pursuing their ambitions and aspirations.
3. Resilience: These children possess inner strength and the ability to draw support from relationships, helping them confront challenges with courage.
4. Joy: Joy in simple experiences and gratitude for kindness defines a hopeful child’s perspective.
5. Wisdom: They reflect on their experiences, understanding their intrinsic value and striving to demonstrate integrity.
6. Personal Faith: A connection with God and the Holy Spirit shapes their spiritual practices.

Impact of Love on Child Development

Research suggests that children flourish optimally when they feel secure, loved, and part of a community dedicated to nurturing their growth. Notably, the pilot study conducted in Bolivia and El Salvador emphasized that the family unit is the primary influence on children’s feelings of God's love. One child articulated the profound linkage between parental love and divine love, highlighting the importance of familial relationships.

Tyler VanderWeele, a prominent Professor from Harvard, reinforced this sentiment, stating, “Investing in the hope and well-being of children is among the most important investments any society can make.”

Global Summit 2026 and Recognition

To amplify the relevance of the Hope & Love Measure, Sandoval Sr. will be honored at the forthcoming Global Summit 2026 Fostering Hope for Children in Vatican City, scheduled for June 3-6, 2026. This event will acknowledge his contributions alongside other distinguished leaders, including the late Pope Francis. Organized by The Society for Global Flourishing, the summit will focus on creating a global framework aimed at nurturing children's experiences of love and hope.

The symposium will gather an influential assembly of leaders across various sectors—service, philanthropy, research, and policy—to discuss and document the impacts of their collaborative efforts in supporting children’s well-being.

World Vision's engagement in this global initiative reflects its commitment to ensuring that every child grows in a nurturing environment filled with love, faith, and dignity. Their ongoing efforts underscore the essence of children as active participants in their development, deserving of love, hope, and a brighter future.
