The 'Seeds of Hope' Project: Bridging Space and Earth
In an inspiring initiative,
KIBO Space Broadcasting Station, operated by the Tokyo-based company Bascule, is teaming up with the
GREEN×EXPO 2027 Association to embark on the ‘
Seeds of Hope’ project. With the aid of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), this project is set to launch seeds designed to foster sustainability and educational outreach into space. Scheduled for liftoff on
October 21, 2025, these seeds, which include species like
sunflowers, marigolds, stocks, and broccoli, will be transported aboard JAXA's new supply spacecraft
HTV-X1 from the
Tanegashima Space Center to the
International Space Station (ISS) module known as KIBO.
A Symbol of Life and Sustainability
The mission embodies a pioneering effort to connect Earth, space, and future generations through what the project describes as a 'relay of life.' Alongside the seeds, the official mascot character of the
GREEN×EXPO 2027, called
Tunk Tunk, will accompany them on their journey, providing an engaging link to the upcoming expo. After a period of residence on the ISS, both the seeds and the mascot will return to Earth to be showcased at the
GREEN×EXPO 2027 event in
Yokohama. This will be a unique opportunity for visitors to witness the growth and blooming of these seeds that once thrived in space.
KIBO Station emphasizes that this initiative not only has tangible outcomes—such as the growth of plants—but also profound educational implications. The project intends to foster a sense of environmental stewardship among students, from elementary to high school. A variety of educational programs will be developed to help young learners understand the importance of protecting our planet and respect for life formed through the unique experiences of connecting Earth and space.
Launch Event at EXPO 2025
The exciting project was unveiled at the
KIBO SPACE LIVE in EXPO 2025, an event held in
Osaka in July 2025, themed around designing a society where life shines brightly. During this event, live communications with astronauts aboard the ISS showcased real-time data and visuals, mixing earth observation technologies with inspiring messages of hope. The event heralded the 'Seeds of Hope' as a dream project that connects hopes for the future, making a profound commitment to educational and ecological objectives.
