Press Release Publication Challenges for PR Professionals
In a recent survey conducted by Metareal, a leading AI company based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, it was revealed that a staggering 60% of public relations professionals rate their press release publication success at 10% or lower. This distressing statistic sheds light on the growing challenges faced by PR teams in an increasingly complex media landscape.
Survey Background
With the rise of social media and diverse media outlets, there have been more opportunities for companies to share their messages. However, this has also led to an increase in the workload for PR professionals. Creating press releases that result in media exposure has become a crucial responsibility, yet many struggle with effective communication strategies.
To delve deeper into the issues surrounding press releases, Metareal surveyed 100 individuals aged 20 to 60 who are engaged in public relations. The aim was to identify the specific challenges these professionals are facing in their press release efforts.
Alarming Publication Rates
When inquired about the average number of press releases generated in a month, respondents indicated an average of 1.72, with some exceeding ten releases. However, when asked about the percentage of these releases successfully published in desired media outlets, 43% reported a disheartening
0% publication rate, followed by 20% indicating a publication rate between 1-10%. Overall, a total of 63% found their publication rates below the 10% threshold.
Reasons for Limited Media Coverage
The survey further explored the reasons behind these low publication rates. The leading concern, cited by 38% of respondents, was a lack of news value in their releases, indicating that the information provided did not possess enough relevance or impact. This was closely followed by insufficient story development for engaging journalists, which 19% identified as a barrier to publication.
Key Challenges in Crafting Effective Press Releases
When asked about the challenges they face while creating press releases, PR professionals identified several key areas of concern. Foremost was the issue of
organizing news value effectively, with 29% of respondents stating it was their biggest struggle. Determining which elements to highlight is a common source of difficulty. Additionally,
differentiation from competitors (25%) and
developing a compelling narrative for media (22%) ranked highly among concerns.
To create impactful press releases that resonate with media outlets, professionals emphasized the need for several critical components. Notably,
top factors included
trendiness and relevance (42%), followed closely by
links to societal issues (40%) and
supporting data and outcomes (33%).
Ideal Media Outlets for PR Professionals
The survey also revealed which media outlets PR professionals aspire to be featured in. An equal 44% expressed interest in being published in
national newspapers and
specialized industry magazines, with
general economic media following at 37%.
