Cambrex, Snapdragon Chemistry, and Q1 Scientific: Leaders in Sustainability and Innovation in Pharma
Pioneering Innovation in the Pharmaceutical Industry
In a significant achievement, Cambrex, a prominent contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has announced that its subsidiary, Snapdragon Chemistry, along with NewAmsterdam Pharma, has been awarded the prestigious "Green Chemistry Challenge Award 2026" by the American Chemical Society. This award recognizes their groundbreaking work on a sustainable synthesis method for drugs, marking a monumental step forward in the aim for eco-friendly pharmaceutical production.
The award is particularly in recognition of their successful development of an innovative organocatalytic method to synthesize the chiral tetrahydroquinoline core, essential for the production of Obicetrapib, a drug currently in advanced stages of development for treating dyslipidemia. This new method not only streamlines the product lifecycle but significantly enhances the overall efficiency and sustainability of the production process.
Sustainable Advancements in Pharmaceutical Synthesis
The joint efforts of NewAmsterdam Pharma and Snapdragon Chemistry yielded a novel industrial-scale synthesis process involving an organocatalyzed asymmetric Povarov cyclization. This method has remarkably improved process efficiency, resulting in an approximate 80% reduction in mass intensity and a 70% decrease in production cycle time. Most strikingly, this innovative synthesis technique has reduced production costs by nearly 50% while completely avoiding the generation of aqueous waste during the process.
Cambrex's commitment to sustainability doesn't end with this recognition. The company has also made strides at its manufacturing site in Milan, which received the EcoVadis gold rating, placing it among the top 5% of organizations evaluated for their environmental, social, and ethical performance. This accolade reflects Cambrex's comprehensive sustainability strategy, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% across its network, with the ambitious goal of a 50% reduction by the year 2030.
Renewable Energy Partnerships
In an effort to further bolster its commitment to environmental responsibility, Q1 Scientific, another subsidiary of Cambrex, has formed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with Flogas. This partnership will allow Q1 Scientific to acquire renewable energy from the Cronalaght wind farm, catering to about 50% of its energy needs at the Waterford site. The collaboration not only supports the environmental goals of Cambrex's clients but also strengthens the company’s standing as a responsible leader in the industry.
According to Thomas Loewald, CEO of Cambrex, "Our commitment at Cambrex is to continually reduce our environmental impact for the benefit of our communities, ensuring long-term, sustainable production solutions for our customers." This sentiment echoes through all the initiatives Cambrex is undertaking, showcasing their dedication to leading the charge in sustainable pharmaceutical production.
With over 45 years of industry experience and a team of approximately 2,000 experts, Cambrex provides specialized manufacturing technologies and capabilities encompassing continuous flow processes, controlled substances, peptide synthesis, solid state chemistry, biocatalysis, material characterization, complex synthesis, and potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Their holistic approach not only strives to meet present needs but also paves the way for a more sustainable future in the pharmaceutical sector.
As the company continues to innovate and set benchmarks in sustainability practices, Cambrex is demonstrating that a commitment to reduced environmental impact and innovative processes can indeed go hand-in-hand in driving the pharmaceutical industry forward.
