UK Mobile Carriers Launch Groundbreaking APIs for Consumer Protection



In a significant move towards enhancing digital safety, major UK mobile operators, including BT, EE, CK Hutchison Group Telecom, Virgin Media O2, and Vodafone Group, have announced the launch of new technologies aimed at age verification and anti-fraud measures. This initiative, part of the GSMA Open Gateway, marks a substantial shift in how online platforms can authenticate users while simultaneously safeguarding them against digital fraud.

On September 23, 2025, these telecom giants revealed their collaboration to provide developers with robust tools necessary for consumer protection and identity verification. The introduction of standardized Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) will enable developers to implement effective age checks and comply with the newly enforced British security laws, particularly after the recent legalization of the Online Safety Act in the UK.

Meeting Regulatory Compliance



The Online Safety Act mandates online platforms that host user-generated content to verify the ages of their users. As a result, it is estimated that UK consumers will undergo an additional 5 million age checks daily, highlighting an urgent demand for scalable, seamless solutions that do not hinder user experience.

During the recent API Days in London, the telecom consortium unveiled the CAMARA-standardized Age Verify and Know Your Customer (KYC) Tenure APIs, with additional enhancements planned by the year-end, including a KYC Match API incorporating fuzzy logic functionalities. This development is essential in addressing two pressing challenges within the UK's digital sector: the necessity of robust age verification mechanisms and the rising threat of online fraud.

Combatting Online Fraud



According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance’s (GASA) report titled The State of Scams in the UK, British citizens lost a staggering £11.4 billion to scams over the past year. This statistic is part of a broader global trend, with criminals reportedly manipulating victims out of over $1 trillion in the same period.

This alarming situation underlines the telecom industry's role in combating such fraud, prompting collaboration with online banking and retail sectors to adopt global standards for technological innovation. Jersey Telecom (JT Group) and TMT.ID are already actively working with UK operators, processing hundreds of thousands of API calls monthly, which support a wide array of services—from age verification for social media platforms to streamlined and secure app registration and login processes.
