Launching the ABE! BUS: A Free Shuttle for AIU Students in Akita

Connecting Students and Akita: The Launch of ABE! BUS

Interg Corporation has officially launched the ABE! BUS, a dedicated shuttle service for students at the Akita International University (AIU). Starting from June 1, 2026, this new transport initiative connects the AIU campus directly to Akita Station in just 30 minutes.

This service is a continuation of the previous Showcase Express route, adapting to the mobility challenges faced by students. By eliminating the need for transfers, which previously took 1.5 to 2 hours, this free service greatly enhances access to the city for students, encouraging them to engage more with the surrounding community.

Interg intends to foster a closer relationship between AIU and Akita City by removing barriers to travel. The goal is to create a seamless connection between the university and the city, allowing students to explore and participate in local events and opportunities.

In alignment with this launch, Interg is actively seeking partnership sponsorships from local businesses that share the vision of supporting student mobility and contributing to community revitalization through collaborative initiatives.

Celebrating the Launch

On June 19, 2026, a commemorative party was held near the AIU campus to mark the commencement of the ABE! BUS service. Students from AIU, local government officials from Akita Prefecture and Akita City, along with representatives from cooperating companies gathered to celebrate this new chapter. Interg's leadership shared insights into the reasons behind taking over the service, emphasizing a commitment to enhancing student life and promoting community connections.

Contextual Background

AIU hosts around 860 students from different parts of Japan and overseas, offering an enriching educational environment in a serene natural setting. However, access to urban centers posed significant challenges. Previously, the only transport option required students to navigate a convoluted route, limiting their opportunities for work, engagement, and community activities.

The former Showcase Express service attempted to address these challenges when it commenced operations in April 2025, quickly garnering over 600 student memberships within a month and demonstrating the high demand for direct transportation options. Building on this success, the ABE! BUS aims to maintain reliable and sustainable service in the future.
