First-of-its-kind Report Highlights Oak Species Threats in Asia

In an alarming revelation, a recent report led by The Morton Arboretum underscores that Asia is home to the largest number of threatened oak species in the world. This detailed study, titled the Conservation Gap Analysis of Select Native Asian Oaks, presents critical findings regarding the precarious state of various oak species located in Southeast and East Asia. The report highlights that over half of these indigenous oaks are under severe threat due to escalating human activities, including agriculture and urban development.

Southeast Asia, known for its rich biodiversity, has a wealth of native oak species, yet many of these are inadequately represented in protected areas and botanical gardens. As emphasized by Kate Good from The Morton Arboretum, this region harbors more threatened oak species than any other part of the globe. Sadly, the data reveals a significant conservation gap, with approximately 74% of the analyzed species not being represented in any botanical collection worldwide.

The report's findings prompt a vital call to action. With species like Quercus trungkhanhensis having only two known individuals left and others like Quercus dilacerata and Quercus dankiaensis critically endangered, immediate steps must be taken to safeguard these trees. The Morton Arboretum's report aims to identify the regions and species that require urgent conservation attention, fostering a focus on facilitating on-the-ground restoration efforts.

Experts indicate that rampant agricultural activities, specifically wood and pulp plantations, have been the predominant threat to oak habitats, impacting two-thirds of the species studied. Other threats include climate change and the diminishing population of trees left in the wild. The findings are based on an analysis of 54 oak species listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, underscoring the critical nature of these trees within their ecosystems.

With ongoing habitat destruction, the report reiterates the crucial role of botanical collections in preserving invaluable genetic diversity through research and potential future reintroductions of these species. As pointed out by the director of the Arboretum’s Global Tree Conservation Program, Silvia Alvarez-Clare, it is essential to prioritize conservation efforts for the oak species most at risk—especially those lacking representation in managed collections.
