CITGO Invests $686,000 in STEM Education Initiatives Across the U.S.

CITGO's Commitment to STEM Education

CITGO Petroleum Corporation recently announced a significant investment of approximately $686,000 aimed at enhancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education through 24 initiatives across Illinois, Louisiana, and Texas. This funding is part of the CITGO STEM Program which is designed to encourage students to pursue STEM-related post-secondary education and technical careers within their communities.

The projects funded this year range from vibrant robotics clubs in Louisiana to innovative classroom enhancements in Texas, providing students with hands-on learning experiences that can ignite their curiosity and prepare them for successful careers in STEM fields. Kresha Sivinski, Vice President of Human Resources and Support Services at CITGO, emphasized the importance of these programs, stating, "Every robot built, circuit wired, or bridge designed in a classroom today is practice for the work our industry needs tomorrow."

Encouraging Future Innovators

The CITGO STEM Program features two primary initiatives: the CITGO Innovation Academies and the CITGO Innovation Scholarship Program. The Innovation Academies provide structured STEM-focused education in partner schools, aimed at cultivating a K-12 pipeline of innovators. These academies embed STEM learning into daily educational experiences, allowing for a seamless integration of technical skills into the curriculum.

Alongside the academies, the CITGO Innovation Scholarship Program assists students in transitioning into college and pursuing careers in STEM fields, further supporting their educational journeys.

This year’s round of funding supports various projects and schools across three states:

Illinois

  • - CITGO Innovation Academies at:
- Lemont High School
- Lockport Township High School District 205
- Valley View School District 365U (Bolingbrook and Romeoville High Schools)

Louisiana

  • - CITGO Innovation Academies at:
- E.K. Key Elementary School
- LeBlanc Middle School
- Sulphur High School

  • - Robotics/STEM Mini Grants for:

Supporting Teacher Training

In addition to supporting individual schools, CITGO’s funding also includes a Signature Program grant to the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. This grant aims to equip educators in Corpus Christi, Texas and Lemont, Illinois with the necessary training to introduce energy education and energy-efficiency curricula into their classrooms. Moreover, CITGO continues to support the Innovation Scholarship Program through Scholarship America, helping to foster a culture of academic achievement and future readiness.

A Leader in the Industry

CITGO Petroleum Corporation is recognized as a key player in the refining industry, operating under its well-established brand. The company manages three refineries located in Lake Charles, Louisiana; Lemont, Illinois; and Corpus Christi, Texas, with a total crude capacity of around 829,000 barrels per day. With a workforce of approximately 3,300 employees, CITGO stands as the fifth largest independent refiner in the United States and is dedicated to advancing not only its business operations but also the education and well-being of the communities it serves.

Conclusion

With their continued investment in STEM education, CITGO aims to foster a new generation of innovators who are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow's industries. These initiatives not only enhance student engagement in STEM fields but also contribute to the long-term growth and development of local communities.
