Kakujo Fishery Launches New Frozen Sushi for Easy Everyday Enjoyment

Kakujo Fishery's New Frozen Sushi: A Culinary Delight

Kakujo Fishery has recently unveiled an exciting addition to its product lineup, the "Frozen Kiwadari Oshizushi" (押寿司), which features three delectable varieties: anago (cooked eel), snow crab, and grilled mackerel. Starting from May 2025, these frozen sushi options will be available at Kakujo stores and the Akagi Kogen Service Area on the Kanetsu Expressway, allowing sushi lovers to enjoy fresh-tasting sushi conveniently prepared in their homes.

The demand for frozen food has surged, continuing on a high trend even after the pandemic, leading to the introduction of various new products by Kakujo Fishery. Apart from traditional items like fried foods and gratins, they have also launched ready-to-cook meal kits like aqua pazza, and premium seafood shumai. In anticipation of the growing need for high-quality frozen food, the focus shifted toward developing frozen sushi.

Kakujo Fishery is renowned for its fresh and thick sushi offerings, appreciated for their excellent cost performance at standalone fish markets. The latest frozen sushi products maintain the signature quality that Kakujo is known for, paying special attention to the taste of the main ingredients, the balance of flavors with sushi rice, and other toppings. Collaborative efforts with San-Sho Co., Ltd., a fisheries processing company based in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, have been instrumental in ensuring that the quality of the sushi remains uncompromised during freezing, and that the microwaved sushi tastes freshly made.

Crafting the Perfect Frozen Sushi

San-Sho Co., Ltd. specializes in creating single-frozen products from seafood sourced in the local area and has developed frozen sushi with a global trend in mind. Their wealth of experience and technology provided the foundation to create Kakujo's new frozen sushi offerings. Numerous rounds of testing and tasting during the planning phase led to the perfected versions of the three types of frozen oshizushi: cooked eel, snow crab, and grilled mackerel.

Easily Prepared at Home

Cooking the frozen sushi is a breeze. Simply remove the sushi from its box, make a small cut in the bag, and microwave it directly from the frozen state for about five minutes. Allow it to rest briefly, and the sushi will rise to perfection, fluffy and ready to serve.

Once heated, the sushi can easily be served on a plate. Each piece is pre-scored for easy separation, ensuring a delightful taste experience that surprises many with its quality, reminiscent of freshly made sushi.

The cooked eel features a sweet glaze made from soy sauce, sugar, and sake, showcasing a buttery texture that melts in your mouth. The sushi rice is enhanced with toasted sesame and a sweet-savory sauce, tying in perfectly with the eel and complemented by rolled tamagoyaki, kanpyo, and spinach for an overall gentle flavor. The grilled mackerel uses thick, fatty fillets that provide a juicy experience, enhanced by the same type of sushi rice used for the snow crab, creating a delightful balance.

A Culinary Experience You Can Enjoy Anytime

Each variety of Kakujo's frozen oshizushi is thoughtfully crafted using domestic rice, ensuring that each ingredient harmonizes. The frozen products come neatly boxed and individually wrapped. The detailed instructions for microwave cooking are provided, meaning there's no need for complex preparations like direct fire or boiling. Simply heat and enjoy!

The frozen sushi offerings include:

  • - Snow Crab Frozen Oshizushi (16 pieces): 1,600 yen (tax included)
