Dawn Carroll Revives Mary Cardwell Dawson's Legacy Through Captivating Musical Tribute

In celebration of National Historic Preservation Month, Boston-based designer and songwriter Dawn Carroll introduces "Songs for Mary," a multimedia project dedicated to the legacy of Mary Cardwell Dawson. This initiative not only pays tribute to the iconic "First Lady of Opera" but also aims to bring attention to the preservation of the historic "Mystery Manor" in Pittsburgh, once labeled one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

Carroll's journey began when she first encountered the deteriorating Queen Anne-style mansion that served as the headquarters for the National Negro Opera Company, founded by Dawson. The mansion, rich in cultural significance, was a safe haven for numerous Black entertainers during segregation, including notable figures like Joe Louis, Lena Horne, and Duke Ellington.

"I fell in love with this house as a designer, but I stayed for the history," Carroll stated. As the co-founder of the Over My Shoulder Foundation alongside Grammy Award winner Patti Austin, Carroll has always recognized the importance of cultural storytelling and mentorship. Through her explorations, she discovered Dawson's extraordinary journey, from studying at the New England Conservatory in the 1920s to establishing her opera company during a time of severe racial discrimination in the arts.

Dawson's tenacity and dedication paved the way for Black artists, creating much-needed opportunities in a segregated society. "She embodies resilience, and her story deserves to be told," Carroll emphasized. This inspiration led her to create "Songs for Mary," a compilation of 15 tracks that blend various musical genres, including opera, rock, and hip-hop, to narrate Dawson's life and achievements.

The project has evolved into a theatrical production entitled "If The Walls Could Talk," which features a modern protagonist transported back to the vibrant 1940s era of the mansion. This full-circle moment came when Carroll's team recently donated artwork from the production to the New England Conservatory, thereby reconnecting Dawson's legacy to her educational roots in Boston.

Carroll advocates for the idea that historic preservation is not merely an act of maintaining buildings, but a vital cultural practice that ensures that the contributions and struggles of pioneers like Mary Cardwell Dawson are recognized and remembered. "Without preserving this house, we would not know this extraordinary history," she asserted.

By shedding light on the significance of Mystery Manor and Dawson's work, Carroll aims to inspire a broader audience to appreciate and engage in the preservation of historical landmarks.
