Weed Science Society Honors Exceptional Contributions in Weed Research and Management
Celebrating Excellence in Weed Science
In a remarkable event that took place on March 5, 2026, the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) and its regional affiliates recognized more than fifty individuals for their exceptional contributions to weed science over the past year. Growing awareness of the importance of sustainable weed management practices highlights the significance of these awards, which were presented during several annual meetings across the nation.
The WSSA held its annual gathering in Raleigh, North Carolina, where it honored over thirty individuals with various prestigious awards. The North Central Weed Science Society (NCWSS) and the Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS) also celebrated the accomplishments of nearly twenty individuals at their respective meetings in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Hilary Sandler, the outgoing president of WSSA, emphasized the critical role that these awardees play in advancing research and public awareness about weeds and invasive species. "Each year, our societies acknowledge top individuals who excel in enhancing weed science research and best management practices. Their contributions are invaluable and essential for mitigating the adverse effects of weeds and invasive species on our ecosystems," Sandler remarked.
A Look at the Award Winners
Among the many distinguished recipients, two individuals received the WSSA Fellow Award, the society's highest honor. Dr. Larry Steckel, a noted Extension Weed Specialist and researcher from the University of Tennessee, and Dr. Joseph Neal, an esteemed Extension Specialist and professor at North Carolina State University, were both recognized for their extensive contributions to the field.
The awards continued with a variety of categories, celebrating achievements in education, research, and outreach in weed science. Dr. Rodrigo Werle from the University of Wisconsin-Madison received the Early Career Outstanding Scientist Award, while the Excellence in Journalism Award went to the podcasters behind 'War Against Weeds,' which features Dr. Sarah Lancaster and her team from Kansas State University, together with their colleagues from North Dakota and Ohio State Universities.
The ceremony also acknowledged outstanding extension specialists and graduate students, demonstrating the breadth of talent in weed science. Dr. Brad Hanson from UC Davis was awarded the Outstanding Extension Award, while the Outstanding Graduate Student Award went to Tristen Avent, who made significant strides in his studies at the University of Arkansas.
In addition, the industry was represented with the presentation of the Outstanding Industry Award to Gary Schwarzlose from Bayer Research and Development, highlighting the collaborative efforts between academia and the private sector in addressing weed challenges.
Importance of Weed Science
The discipline of weed science has progressively become more critical as agriculture and ecosystems face the challenges posed by invasive species. The contributions from individuals across academia, government, and private industry play a significant role in developing more effective weed management solutions. Recognizing exemplary efforts through awards fosters an environment of inspiration and motivation among researchers, educators, and practitioners.
The innovations and insights brought forth by these awardees pave the way for improved practices that can mitigate the ecological disruptions caused by weeds. The growth of the Weed Science Society of America since its inception in 1956 demonstrates the ongoing commitment to research, outreach, and education surrounding the ever-relevant topic of weeds and their impacts on both managed and natural systems.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Sandler reiterated the importance of these accomplishments. "Thanks to the dedication of these individuals, our understanding and management of ecological threats will only continue to improve, benefiting our natural resources and economy."
