CATL Launches the Groundbreaking TENER Stack Energy Storage System with a Capacity of 9 MWh

CATL Introduces the World's First 9 MWh TENER Stack Energy Storage System

In a significant technological advancement presented during the EES Europe 2025 event, CATL has unveiled the TENER Stack, the world's pioneering ultra-large capacity energy storage system with a capacity of 9 MWh. This innovative product is not just about high capacity but represents a strategic evolution in the realms of scalability, adaptability, safety, and transportation.

Addressing Global Energy Demands

As global energy demands soar, driven by sectors like AI data centers and industrial electrification, CATL's TENER Stack is positioned to provide utility companies and industrial users with enhanced economic value from their installations. Amanda Xu, the Chief Technology Officer of ESS (Energy Storage Systems) at CATL, highlighted the company's commitment to leading the energy transformation, stating, "We introduce TENER to cater to high-density energy systems, combining compact size, simplified AC equipment setup, and flexible deployment features."

Exceptional Capacity and Efficiency

The TENER Stack employs CATL's high-energy density cells featuring a five-year zero degradation technology. This results in a 45% improvement in volume usage and a 50% increase in expected energy density compared to traditional 20-foot container systems. With a staggering internal capacity of 9 MWh, the system can charge up to 150 electric vehicles or power an average German household for six years.

One of the prominent advantages of TENER Stack lies in its versatility in supporting both centralized and modular PCS (Power Conversion Systems) architectures, facilitating seamless integration with major AC devices and varied applications across the grid.

Significant Cost-Efficiency and Space Utilization

CATL emphasizes the economic benefits of the TENER Stack, noting that deploying 800 MWh of storage using this system requires nearly one-third fewer containers than conventional 6 MWh systems. This reduction not only minimizes the number of PCS units needed and hidden oversized system costs but also enhances land usage efficiency by 40%. As a result, developers can anticipate a cost optimization of up to 20% in the overall construction of generation stations.

Innovative Design for Logistics

Addressing the logistical challenges tied to transporting containers exceeding 36 tons—the legal threshold in many countries—CATL has devised a two-in-one design for the TENER Stack. Each unit, being half height, is strictly controlled to remain below this weight, ensuring compliance with transport regulations in 99% of global markets. This innovative structural concept allows for the use of standard transportation methods, including regular trailers and container chassis, significantly cutting down waiting times and reducing specialist transport costs by approximately 35%.

Safety Standards and Temperature Management

With global regulations emphasizing fire safety, the TENER Stack is engineered using CATL's LFP battery chemistry, known for its inherent thermal stability. Enhanced gas sensors deliver a 40% sensitivity increase, accelerating the activation of suppressing systems by 35%. A new three-layer insulation configuration enhances fire resistance up to two hours while meeting IEEE693 seismic standards, capable of withstanding earthquakes of magnitude 9 and category 5 hurricanes. Furthermore, the integrated Thermal Management System (TMS) lowers thermal radiation, cuts land and maintenance costs, and keeps noise levels at a mere 65 dB(A) at one meter, making it ideal for urban applications.

Beyond Energy Storage: A Vision for Future Energy

As of November 2024, CATL’s ESS products have been implemented in over 1,700 projects across diverse climatic zones and operational environments globally. Recognizing the evolving customer needs in 2023, CATL also launched TENER, a containerized energy storage system equivalent to twenty feet with a five-year zero degradation technology and TENER FLEX—a rack-mounted energy storage system for flexible deployment.

The TENER Stack leverages proven performance from the CATL TENER and TENER FLEX series, combining previous model advantages with new performance levels and transport capabilities. Through TENER Stack, CATL reaffirms its commitment to assist global partners in accelerating energy transformation by delivering more energy in less space—safely and sustainably. Hank Zhao, the technical director of ESS Europe at CATL stated, "TENER Stack is not just an energy storage product, but a comprehensive solution for energy availability that can be leveraged globally. The 9 MWh capacity is not a limit, and every breakthrough in energy density will unlock greater energy value from lesser space."
