Hunger-Free World Continues Its Efforts in Benin Amid Challenges

Tackling Hunger: Hunger-Free World's Initiatives in Benin

Hunger-Free World (HFW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world free of hunger. One of its operational bases is located in Benin, Africa, where significant efforts are being made to enhance local livelihoods and promote self-sufficiency among communities.

Recently, two new team members, Ueno, who oversees international operations, and Koike, who has taken on audit responsibilities, traveled to Benin to report on their experiences and observations during their trip. This marked a first visit for both and provided them with a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges and successes in the field. The findings from their visit highlight the concept of “supporting so that no support is needed,” which is key to HFW’s mission.

To share these insights, HFW is organizing a hybrid event that will take place on December 11th in Tokyo and online. Participants will have the chance to view videos and photographs capturing the heart of the community as they work toward greater autonomy. The event program includes a virtual tour of daily life in Benin, an update on local activities, and an overview of HFW's operations.

Event Program:

1. Walking Through Benin (Presented by: Koike)
A virtual tour using engaging photographs and videos to immerse participants in the daily life and culture of Benin.

2. Benin Trip Report (Presented by: Ueno)
A detailed report showcasing communities poised for self-sufficiency, presented with vivid imagery and multimedia. This presentation marks the culmination of 20 years of efforts by HFW to build sustainable mechanisms that enable communities to thrive independently.

Overview of Hunger-Free World (HFW)

Founded over 20 years ago, HFW is an international cooperation NGO headquartered in Japan, with operational branches in Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Uganda. It focuses on empowering local communities to become self-reliant and sustainably produce nutritious food. The organization works towards realizing the right to food for all by addressing the food production chain, from cultivation to consumption, and by combating challenges like unjust trade practices, food loss, and climate change. HFW collaborates with governments and local entities to nurture capable communities and systems that can sustain these efforts in the long run.
