FIF and CURIOSITY Host Engaging Design Workshop for Kids in 2026

Exploring the World of Design: FIF and CURIOSITY Workshop 2026

On March 27, 2026, a unique and engaging design workshop took place at the headquarters of CURIOSITY in Shibuya, Tokyo, organized by the Future Innovation Forum (FIF) and CURIOSITY. This event, titled "Exploring the World of Design 2026," was aimed at introducing children to the realms of design through a hands-on approach, especially in the context of STEAM education.

This was the second installment of this workshop, reflecting both organizations’ commitment to fueling creativity and innovation among young minds. A total of 11 participants, ranging from fifth-grade students to ninth-graders, were chosen through an open application process.

Learning and Creation

The workshop kicked off with an introduction to the art and science of design, focusing on the experiential learning aspects of the subject. CURIOSITY, known for its expertise in luxury brand spaces, provided insights into various design principles and the thought processes behind creating engaging environments and products. After a brief orientation, the young attendees toured the office, absorbing the stimulating environment where creativity flourishes.

In the core activity, participants engaged in crafting unique lamp shades while utilizing ordinary materials like washi paper, paper cups, and balloons. This practical hands-on experience encouraged them to push their creative boundaries and bring their ideas to life. By using smartphone lights as a source, the children learned the intricacies of design as they experimented to create their distinctive "forms of light."

The culmination of the workshop involved each child presenting their final creations, complete with a title and an explanation of their inspirations and challenges faced during the making process. The professional designer who facilitated the session praised the kids for their exceptional efforts, noting how they not only considered light but also the interplay of shadows in their designs.

Voices from the Participants

Feedback from the attendees highlighted the profound impact of the workshop:
  • - "The environment was incredibly stimulating; seeing the designers at work was inspiring."
  • - "While there were challenging moments, I discovered many things by just getting my hands involved, and I’m proud of my finished design!"
  • - "I felt nervous presenting my lamp shade, but it was exciting to share my favorite features with others and see their works!"
  • - "One child’s ability to recreate a motif using washi paper stood out as particularly impressive."

The Future Innovation Forum (FIF) aims to continue providing enriching learning experiences for children, driving innovation and contributing to a richer future for individuals and society alike.
