ECOALF Launches Second Edition of UTO JAPAN T-Shirts to Promote Marine Recycling

ECOALF's New Initiative for Marine Sustainability

ECOALF, a sustainable fashion brand by Sanyo Shokai, is expanding its commitment towards environmental conservation with the launch of the second edition of the UTO JAPAN T-shirt on June 5, ahead of World Oceans Day on June 8. This unique T-shirt is produced from recycled PET bottles collected through the "UPCYCLING THE OCEANS JAPAN" initiative.

A Commitment to Marine Cleanliness

The UTO JAPAN initiative serves to enhance marine recycling efforts, which were initially launched to combat ocean waste and promote the use of recycled materials. The first batch of T-shirts was a great success back in October 2021, and now the second edition is set to further this mission, employing a 100% mono-material fabric.

ECOALF collaborates closely with Shinjuku Takashimaya to facilitate clean-up events. In March 2024, they opened a new store location and have since organized five clean-up activities, collecting more PET bottles through events and designated collection boxes placed in-store.

The Recycling Process

The process leading to the creation of these eco-friendly T-shirts is fascinating. Initially, PET bottles, made from polyethylene terephthalate derived from petroleum, are collected, sorted, and compressed. This helps to minimize the reliance on virgin raw materials. After collection, the bottles undergo thorough cleaning and shredding, transforming them into small pellets suitable for material recycling.

These pellets are then melted and spun into yarn, which is woven and dyed before being manufactured into the final product at sewing factories. The entire production process is handled within Japan, ensuring strict quality control and sustainability practices are maintained.

Collaborative Efforts

The UTO JAPAN project has seen significant collaboration with fishermen and maritime organizations, especially since its origins in Spain in 2015. Over the years, over 1700 tons of ocean waste have been reclaimed thanks to this endeavor, highlighting the real impact of grassroots initiatives on a global scale.

In addition to the product launch, an exclusive pop-up store will be available at Shinjuku Takashimaya from June 5 to June 10, where customers can learn more about the recycling process and shop the collection. This event underscores the brand's aim of integrating sustainable practices into everyday consumer choices, all while raising awareness about marine conservation.
