Thomas Jefferson University Expands Academic Programs into Lehigh Valley for Healthcare Advancement
Major Academic Expansion by Thomas Jefferson University in Lehigh Valley
Thomas Jefferson University has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its educational offerings into the Lehigh Valley, aiming to bolster the local healthcare workforce while supporting economic development in the region. The initiative is set to begin in Fall 2026, marking a significant step forward in Jefferson's ongoing commitment to improving healthcare education and access.
Among the highlights of this expansion is the launch of onsite nursing education through the Jefferson College of Nursing at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Center for Healthcare Education, located in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. This will feature a full-time Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in Nurse Anesthesia, along with several online graduate programs such as a Master of Science in Nursing and specializations related to Adult Gerontology-Acute Care, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
In addition to these programs, a PhD in Nursing and an RN-to-BSN program are on the horizon, all pending necessary accreditations. "We are thrilled to expand our University's world-class academic experience to the Lehigh Valley," stated Dr. Susan C. Aldridge, President of Thomas Jefferson University. "By investing in innovative pathways, comprehensive clinical training, and fostering strong regional partnerships, we are building a sustainable pipeline for educating the next generation of healthcare professionals."
Jefferson will also introduce an online Associate of Science program in Paramedicine in Fall 2026. This program will recognize the prior training of paramedics by granting up to 30 academic credits, providing a fast-tracked route to obtaining a college degree while promoting career advancement. Graduates will gain direct admission into various bachelor's degree programs offered by the College of Health Professions, ensuring that their associate degree credits are fully recognized.
Additionally, the institution plans to address the critical shortage of respiratory therapists within the Lehigh Valley through a specially designed Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy program. To facilitate hands-on training, a satellite respiratory therapy laboratory will open at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, allowing students to engage in clinical training while concurrently undertaking online coursework.
To further promote educational access, respiratory therapy students maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher will be eligible for waived admission into Jefferson's Master's programs in Cardiovascular Perfusion or Physician Assistant Studies. The expansion also includes a commitment to increase the number of clinical rotations at Jefferson Health–Lehigh Valley Region hospitals, which are already seeing active participation from Sidney Kimmel Medical College students.
Reflecting on the initiative, Dr. Joseph G. Cacchione, CEO of Jefferson, emphasized the university's dedication to enhancing lives through superior education and training, which serves to address critical healthcare challenges and catalyze economic revitalization in the local community.
Moreover, in partnership with community stakeholders, a residential facility in Allentown will cater to students from all Lehigh Valley programs, contributing to both interprofessional education and local economic growth.
Collectively, Jefferson's extensive commitment to expanding academic programs in the Lehigh Valley symbolizes a forward-looking investment in the region's education and healthcare systems, aiming for significant contributions now and in the future. Potential students and local professionals will be eagerly anticipating the upcoming changes, which promise to provide a wealth of opportunities in the healthcare sector.
Through this initiative, Thomas Jefferson University not only aims to enhance its educational offerings but also aspires to fulfill a vital role in the healthcare workforce development essential for the region's long-term prosperity.
