Introducing the Tokyo Career Design Course at Yoyogi High School

Yoyogi High School Introduces a New Career-Oriented Course

Yoyogi High School, renowned for its open communication approach, is stepping forward with an innovative program aimed at high school students who might face economic barriers to education. This initiative, known as the Tokyo Career Design Course, permits students to attend classes three days a week while working for the other two days. This dual model not only enables them to aim for their high school diploma but also lets them gain valuable work experience during their formative years.

Aiming for True Education Through Work Experience

Since its inception in 2006, Yoyogi High School has been committed to supporting students who had to give up on further education due to financial constraints. The school initially established the Yoyogi High School Scholarship Course in collaboration with companies to provide financial assistance and salaries to students. While government support for education has gradually eased tuition burdens, the school believes that real-world experience is essential for genuine learning. The social interactions that occur during adolescence are crucial for personal development and character formation as well.

Recognizing these perspectives, Yoyogi High School has developed the new Tokyo Career Design Course as a comprehensive approach to blending work experiences with academic learning. This is not merely an internship; the program allows students to earn a salary while engaged in meaningful work, thus fostering their growth as responsible citizens rather than just ‘customers’ in a workplace environment. Moreover, students can achieve financial independence by earning money for living expenses and personal use.

In the three days of classes per week, students will discuss work-related topics and reflect on their experiences with peers who share similar job backgrounds. This collaborative learning environment will help them grasp the significance of their work experience and encourage self-directed learning.

Benefits of the Tokyo Career Design Course

This course offers various advantages:
  • - Two Days of Paid Employment: Students will gain essential workplace skills and a sense of responsibility through substantial job experiences. These positions will be primarily at Tokyo Ichiban Foods for kitchen and hall operations, alongside opportunities provided through contract work with Max Support at logistics centers.
  • - Flexible Scheduling: The program offers adaptable arrangements to accommodate students' needs concerning days and hours.
  • - Three Days of Study: Students will attend classes at Yoyogi Academy, located a mere six-minute walk from JR Yoyogi Station, allowing peer interactions that broaden their perspectives on the importance of work.
  • - Financial Independence: The earnings from their jobs can cover tuition and household expenses, empowering students with a sense of self-sufficiency.
  • - Simultaneous Acquisition of High School Qualification and Professional Skills: By the time they turn 18, students will emerge not just with a diploma but also equipped with confidence and practical skills as they transition into adulthood.
