Fukuoka High School Students Experience Next-Gen Digital Sport Cyber KASSEN

Experience the Future of Digital Sports: Cyber KASSEN

On August 1, 2025, the Japan Sassen Association held a unique experiential classroom for students from Fukuoka Prefectural Yahata High School at the Nagareyama Lifelong Learning Center in Chiba Prefecture. As part of a program exploring digital sports, students engaged in Cyber KASSEN, an innovative team-based digital sport that emphasizes strategy and collaboration.

A New Era for Digital Learning

Unlike last year's session, where students participated in one-on-one digital sword fighting with SASSEN, this year's focus was on a group combat format that encourages tactical teamwork. Around 80 enthusiastic high schoolers faced off, utilizing ICT tools to engage in strategic battles. The program highlighted not just competition, but also created an immersive learning environment that intertwined physical activity with technology.

Structure of the Program

The day unfolded as six teams, each consisting of up to 14 members, competed in various survival challenges. Matches included head-to-head battles between team representatives, culminating in an exciting survival showdown exclusively for teachers. The diverse rules of Cyber KASSEN, including leader defense scenarios and team wipeout matches, added layers of excitement and strategy, allowing the program to be customized to fit educational objectives and community events.

Enhancements in Education

Integrating ICT and Physical Activity

Cyber KASSEN combines sensor technology and applications, allowing real-time impact assessments and scorekeeping. This integration promotes a holistic approach to physical education, information technology, and inquiry-based learning.

Fostering Strategic and Cooperative Learning

Through team-based gameplay, students developed tactical plans and assigned roles, enhancing their decision-making capabilities and teamwork skills. The challenging yet enjoyable environment helped students bond and motivated them to work together effectively.

Inclusivity and Safety

Cyber KASSEN can accommodate participants of all ages and athletic backgrounds, providing an inclusive setting for educational pursuits. Such adaptable programming makes it particularly suitable for school events and various educational contexts.

Student Reactions

As students experienced Cyber KASSEN for the first time, they quickly began showcasing their team dynamics and communication skills. Feedback included sentiments like, "It's fun to strategize together" and "We all had a great time participating as a group." The enthusiasm was palpable, creating an encouraging atmosphere throughout the day.
