Independent Publishers Expo Welcomes Global Publishers to Its Inaugural Event in 2026

Independent Publishers Expo Set for 2026: A New Era in Independent Publishing

The Independent Publishers Expo, organized by LLC INSECTS, QANDO Co., Ltd., Miwansha, Tababooks, and Million Years Bookstore, aims to revitalize the independent publishing scene in Japan. The event will take place on January 18-19, 2026, at DAIKANYAMA GARAGE, marking the first time that both local and international publishers will gather to showcase their work and engage with readers and booksellers alike.

A Unique Platform for Independent Creators

At the expo, visitors will encounter a dynamic and innovative format. Unlike traditional book fairs, independent publishers will man their booths, providing direct sales opportunities to readers while also hosting business meetings with bookstore representatives. This dual approach underscores the event's mission to bridge the gap between publishers, readers, and booksellers, fostering connections in a rapidly changing literary landscape.

The expo also aims to address the challenges faced by small and independent publishers in Japan. As the publishing industry grapples with transformation, this gathering seeks to spotlight lesser-known publishers and provide them the exposure necessary to thrive in a competitive marketplace, especially amidst a surge in the popularity of zines and independent titles.

International Participation: A Global Perspective

The expo is thrilled to announce participation from various international publishers, including:
  • - Taiwan Independent Publishers Alliance: A nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting small presses and individual creators across Taiwan.
  • - LouderBooks, 편않, and dokebisha from South Korea: A collective of independent publishers under the auspices of the Mapo Publishing Cultural Center.
  • - PPIYACKPPIYACK BOOKS: A comic book publisher based in Jeollabuk-do, composed of a creative duo.
  • - Press Print Party from Indonesia: A book fair run by multiple independent publishers.

Together, these international participants will enrich the expo's offerings, reflecting the diverse voices and stories that independent publishing has to provide.

Why Now? The Need for Independent Publishers Expo

The decision to launch the Independent Publishers Expo comes at a critical juncture in the Japanese publishing industry. The year 2025 is significant as it signals a break from traditional distribution channels that have governed publishing for decades. The rise of zines has galvanized not only independent bookstores but also major chains to explore direct deals with creators, creating unprecedented opportunities for visibility.

However, many independent publishers continue to struggle with visibility and accessibility within the market. As small teams operate these enterprises, outreach to bookstores can be limited, leaving their innovative works in relative obscurity. This expo intends to change that narrative, bringing together readers eager for unique content, bookstores seeking fresh titles, and publishers who are passionate about their craft.

Additionally, amidst the so-called publishing recession, a wave of aspiring independent bookstore owners and publishers is emerging. This event provides an invaluable opportunity for current publishers to connect with these future entrepreneurs, offering mentorship and support in their endeavors.
