Coal India Limited and AM Green Aim for India's Largest Renewable Energy Supply Deal

Transforming India's Energy Landscape

In a monumental move for renewable energy in India, Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced plans to deliver 4500 MW of carbon-free energy to the forthcoming ammonia plants of AM Green. This ambitious initiative aims to integrate both solar and wind power resources, signifying a crucial step toward achieving India's national objective of a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix. The official announcement came on May 7, when both companies signed a formal, non-binding memorandum of understanding concerning the long-term supply and procurement of renewable energy.

The prospective breakdown of this renewable energy supply sees 2500 to 3000 MW generated from solar facilities and 1500 to 2000 MW from wind power sources. The entire project is estimated to carry a price tag of approximately Rs. 25,000 Crores. CIL plans to explore potential wind energy project locations in southern states while targeting solar installation sites in sunny regions such as Gujarat and Rajasthan.

To ensure a steady supply of green energy for AM Green's operations, the two renewable energy sources will be complemented by a pumped storage power plant. As CIL's Chairman P M Prasad noted, “While coal remains essential for meeting India’s growing energy demands in the near term, our plans reflect a proactive role in crafting a greener, more sustainable future. This aligns with our commitment to become the integrated energy provider for the nation.”

AM Green, backed by the founders of Greenko, a leading provider of energy transformation solutions in India, has set ambitious goals to produce 5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This would equate to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen and represents a significant contribution to India’s national green hydrogen production targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Anil Chalamalasetty, the founder of AM Green, expressed excitement over the collaboration with CIL, emphasizing, “We are thrilled to partner with CIL on one of the largest contracts for carbon-free renewable energy worldwide. Our goal is to become one of the most competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules globally.”

This agreement was formalized by Sudarsan Bora, GM (EM) at CIL, and Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior Vice President of Business Development at AM Green, highlighting the importance of strategic alliances in achieving energy efficiency and environmental goals. Joining them in this pivotal step was Mukesh Choudhary, CIL’s Director of Marketing, as well as other key executives from both organizations.

A Commitment to Sustainability

The partnership signifies a crucial collaboration that seeks to position both CIL and AM Green at the forefront of India's energy transition. By harnessing renewable resources effectively, they aim to reduce carbon footprints and foster sustainable practices while ensuring energy security that adapts to the burgeoning energy needs of the nation.

AM Green is determined to lead in the commercial production of green chemicals, hydrogen, and biofuels, with a strong emphasis on expanding the usage and production of green ammonia at multiple sites across India. Their goal to yield 5 MTPA of green ammonia aligns not only with India’s own production aspirations but also contributes to European import objectives, underscoring the global significance of this endeavor.

As CIL continues to play a vital role in India's energy supply landscape, this partnership with AM Green could pave the way for transformative changes. By focusing on renewable energy and sustainability, both companies are contributing to India's ambitious vision for net-zero emissions, potentially making a lasting impact on global environmental efforts.
