ITRI Achieves Top 100 Global Innovators Recognition for Ninth Year

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has made a remarkable milestone by being awarded a spot on the 2025 Top 100 Global Innovators list, a recognition it has achieved for the ninth time. This prestigious accolade, organized by Clarivate, was presented at a ceremony in Taipei on April 25, 2025. Among more than 1.1 million organizations globally, ITRI is one of only three research institutions to be honored, cementing its status as a leader in technological innovation within the Asia-Pacific region.

This year's event saw an impressive 13 organizations from Taiwan being recognized as Top 100 Global Innovators, including major firms such as TSMC, MediaTek, and Foxconn. This achievement not only sets a national record but also places Taiwan third in the number of awards received, underscoring the country’s robust emphasis on research and development.

Assessing Innovation Through Patents

The Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovators list is compiled through meticulous patent analysis, recognizing organizations that showcase consistent, impactful innovation. ITRI’s inclusion in this esteemed list underscores its excellence across various key indicators such as patent uniqueness, globalization, and the overall impact of its research. As noted by Vasheharan Kanesarajah, Vice President of Business Strategy at Clarivate, ITRI distinguished itself as the only government and academic research entity in the Asia-Pacific to gain this recognition, solidifying its influential role in the global landscape of intellectual property and innovation.

Throughout its tenure, ITRI has consistently delivered influential patents that have catalyzed advancements across multiple sectors, establishing a significant footprint in the global innovation ecosystem. Edwin Liu, the President of ITRI, expressed that as the technology landscape continues to evolve rapidly, innovation remains the sole avenue for progress. He reaffirmed ITRI's commitment to addressing real-world challenges through market-driven research and development efforts.

Interestingly, during his speech, Liu highlighted ITRI’s proactive approach to connecting research with market demand. The organization has formed partnerships with over 40 financial institutions and the Small and Medium Enterprise Credit Guarantee Fund of Taiwan (TSMEG) to promote the monetization of intangible assets. This initiative aims to foster an environment where businesses leverage research and innovations for economic growth.

To further safeguard and capitalize on its intellectual properties, ITRI established the Intellectual Property Innovation Corporation (IPIC). This initiative aims to cultivate a robust patent ecosystem that secures key technology patents, helping companies to minimize the risks associated with patent litigations and to better navigate the global market.

Advancing Patent Analysis

In a bid to enhance its capabilities, ITRI has developed an advanced AI system designed to streamline the patent analysis process specifically for the information and communications technology sector. This innovative system can evaluate over 400,000 global standard-essential 5G patents and specifications developed by notable organizations such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Such advancements significantly diminish IP-related risks and bolster decision-making efficiencies in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

ITRI, established in 1973, has been pivotal in transforming Taiwan’s industries from labor-intensive models to innovation-driven frameworks. Over the years, it has launched its 2035 Technology Strategy and Roadmap, aiming to steer innovation in areas like Smart Living, Quality Health, Sustainable Environment, and a Resilient Society. Moreover, ITRI is committed to supporting startups and spinoffs, contributing to the global tech ecosystem by promoting international collaboration through its branches in the U.S., Germany, Japan, and Thailand.
