Xu, who begins her day with light household chores before heading to the 'senior canteen' with her 90-year-old husband, experiences the benefits of this initiative firsthand. The senior canteen offers affordable meals tailored to the local palate, and for just 1 yuan (around $0.14), patrons can enjoy nutritious dishes. Xu expresses her gratitude, stating that cooking used to be a troublesome task, but now the couple can enjoy meals with their friends while socializing, adding a delightful aspect to their lives.

Yiyuan County has recognized that with 26% of its population aged 60 and above, traditional elder care services are inadequate for such a high demographic in need. The county's rugged terrain makes it even more challenging to provide comprehensive care. To counteract these difficulties, Yiyuan has embraced an innovative strategy termed “Farming for farmers, caring for farmers,” centralizing resources through the 'Yiyuanhong' project. This initiative includes not only senior canteens but also health clinics, convenience stores, and various community services, thereby fostering a self-sufficient environment for seniors.

Since the project's inception in 2022, Yiyuan County has built 230 Happy Home Livelihood Complexes and established 168 food assistance stations, ensuring that all 446 villages in the county have access to elder care services. In addition to nourishing meals, these centers provide a communal space for social interaction, enhancing the quality of life for many elderly residents.

The model extends beyond the canteens, integrating local agricultural practices to support the elderly financially. The complexities of daily life, such as meal preparation and health care, are addressed through a grassroots network that connects local resources with the needs of seniors. Services such as meal delivery for those with limited mobility have also been incorporated, ensuring that no elder is left unattended.

The central kitchen operated by Luzhong Food Company further exemplifies the project's success. It supplies daily meals to various village canteens, streamlining operations and reducing the burden on local kitchen staff. This initiative has not only improved food quality but has also created job opportunities within the community.

As Yiyuan County continues to expand its services, the village chiefs play a pivotal role in promoting and implementing elder care initiatives. Their local insight guides the development of personalized solutions that cater to each village's specific needs. For example, villages like Yihetou have capitalized on their resources, leading to the development of financial self-sustaining elder care facilities.

The integration of technology into this model has also been crucial. Smart elder care platforms connected to homes allow for real-time monitoring, ensuring that seniors receive timely medical assistance when needed. This high-tech approach not only enhances service delivery but paves the way for future expansion in similar rural regions across China.
