In a significant move to address the looming healthcare workforce crisis in North Carolina, the NC Community College System has announced a groundbreaking initiative backed by $6 million in new funding. This initiative, funded by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust and AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina, aims to expand the successful Boost program across the state, facilitating the entry of more students into essential healthcare careers.

What is the Boost Program?

The Boost program is a strategic partnership designed to streamline student pathways into high-wage and high-demand careers, particularly in the healthcare sector. This program provides vital support mechanisms including tuition assistance, funding for textbooks, and monthly stipends, enabling students to focus entirely on their education. The goal is to enhance graduation rates and ensure that North Carolina meets its urgent healthcare workforce requirements.

According to Dr. Jeff Cox, President of the NC Community Colleges System, this infusion of resources is pivotal. “Today, we are marking a pivotal moment in the expansion of our statewide success initiative, the NC Community Colleges Boost program. Confidence in this model is growing, and we are thrilled to announce not one but two major philanthropic investments that amplify Boost's impact,” he stated during the announcement.

Funding Breakdown and Its Impact

The $6 million investment comprises two equal parts, each dedicated to different facets of the Boost initiative. The first is a $3 million expansion at Wake Technical Community College, aimed at enhancing healthcare degree offerings. Robby Russell, Grant Officer for the Kenan Charitable Trust, commented, “The credibility of the Boost model is undeniable, and we believe in this model and the ambitious statewide vision of Propel NC.”

The second commitment is also $3 million, allocated to a pilot program known as the Bridge pilot, initiated by AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina. This program will support up to 1,000 students pursuing short-term healthcare credentials in crucial roles like certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). This expansion is designed to extend similar protections and support to those not necessarily seeking traditional degrees but who are essential to filling immediate roles in the healthcare system.

Heidi Chan, Market President for AmeriHealth Caritas, emphasized that this investment is critical. “This community investment will help students overcome financial barriers that can derail their journey to meaningful careers in service to their communities.”

Addressing Workforce Shortages

The reason behind this funding initiative is increasingly apparent. North Carolina faces a projected shortfall of nearly 12,500 registered nurses by 2033 and around 9,070 CNA positions go unfilled every year. The Boost program is seen as a proactive approach to not only fill these necessary roles but to also build a more robust healthcare workforce to serve the growing population of North Carolina.

Randall Johnson, Chair of the NC Community Colleges Foundation, remarked on the significance of this funding, noting that it counts toward their larger $75 million Soar campaign, which has already raised over $60 million to enhance student success.

In the coming months, the NC Community College System will issue a Request for Proposals to identify three colleges where the AmeriHealth Caritas Bridge pilot will be launched. This ambitious initiative is expected to invigorate the healthcare workforce and significantly contribute to North Carolina’s economy.
