Experience the Magic of Matsumoto Castle with Stunning Projection Mapping from 2025 to 2026

Matsumoto Castle Projection Mapping 2025-2026

The highly anticipated Matsumoto Castle projection mapping event, titled "The Timeless Castle: A Story of Light", is set to take place from December 13, 2025, to February 15, 2026. This enchanting display, produced by HiTōhata, in collaboration with Epson Sales Corporation and Seiko Epson Corporation, promises to captivate audiences with its mesmerizing visuals set against the backdrop of one of Japan's most treasured national monuments.

Matsumoto Castle, known for its remarkable five-tiered structure, stands as one of the oldest existing national treasures. This year's projection mapping will celebrate its architectural beauty by showcasing historic artworks, vibrant flowers, and local craftsmanship through digital projections. Visitors will witness the intricate images sourced from the Matsumoto City Museum's collection, such as Nishiki-e, exquisite folding screens, and culturally rich motifs like Matsumoto Temari (traditional handmade balls) and lanterns.

The event is organized under the auspices of the Matsumoto Castle Town Festa Organizing Committee and emphasizes a community-centric approach. In addition to breathtaking projections on the castle and its stone walls, there will be an array of interactive contents along the pathways, laser mapping at the castle gates, and illuminated displays throughout the Matsumoto Castle Park.

Event Schedule

The projection mapping features three exciting phases, each offering a different thematic representation that showcases the castle’s rich history and seasonal beauty:
  • - Phase 1: The Timeless Castle - A Story of Light (December 13, 2025 - January 7, 2026)
  • - Phase 2: The Light of Memories - Highlights Digest (January 8 - January 28, 2026)
  • - Phase 3: The Blooming Castle - Spring's Arrival (January 29 - February 15, 2026)

With each display lasting around nine minutes, and intermissions of about three minutes, attendees can enjoy continuous projections that narrate the castle's story through light. The event seeks to envelop audiences in a rich auditory and visual experience while showcasing traditional Japanese culture and artistry.

Given that this year marks the third consecutive year Matsumoto Castle has hosted such an event, this projection mapping initiative has gained significant popularity, welcoming numerous visitors each season.

The Matsumoto Castle projection mapping event is free to enter, with no advance reservations necessary, making it accessible for both locals and tourists eager to delve into cultural enrichment during the winter months.
