Tokyo Water Science Museum Achieves 2 Million Visitors
The Tokyo Water Science Museum, located in Koto City, Tokyo, has recently celebrated a significant milestone by surpassing 2 million visitors since its renovation. This impressive feat represents their commitment to educating the public about the importance and wonders of water in an engaging environment.
Originally opened in May 1997, the museum is operated by the Tokyo Waterworks Bureau and serves as a hands-on indoor facility that highlights the significance of water from a scientific perspective. It underwent renovation in June 2010, introducing new attractions such as the "Aqua Park," which vividly represents the water cycle, and the immersive theater experience called "Aqua Trip," where visitors can enjoy a thrilling cinematic journey themed around water.
To facilitate learning about the relationship between daily life and water, the museum also features "Aqua Town," which enables guests of all ages to engage in interactive games and quizzes. Visitors can join the "Aqua Tour," a daily event where participants explore the underground Ariake Water Supply Station with the help of knowledgeable attendants. This opportunity has become increasingly popular, especially among families seeking educational experiences for their children.
In response to the growing demand for hands-on learning activities, the museum launched the "Children’s Science Challenge" last year, which includes experiments and crafts using the properties of water. These activities, along with weekend science shows, performances, and various workshops, have contributed to the center’s status as a must-visit destination.
With visitors coming not just from various regions of Japan but also from around the world, the total visitor count since the museum's reopening has reached an impressive 2 million, totaling approximately 3.6 million since its inception. In the last fiscal year alone, the museum registered over 170,000 visitors, marking its highest single-year attendance since the renovation.
The Tokyo Water Science Museum aims to continue its mission of fostering interest in water and water supply systems among the public. It focuses on being a hands-on learning environment that combines fun and education for all ages.
In addition to its everyday offerings, the museum will also be conducting off-site "Children’s Science Challenge" events on November 29, January 17, February 7, and March 21, at the Tokyo Water History Museum in Bunkyo City, further expanding its outreach.
As Takemura Rikun, the General Manager, expressed, "We are genuinely grateful for the support that has allowed us to reach this notable milestone of 2 million visitors. The Tokyo Water Science Museum is a place where people of all ages can learn and have fun, aligning with their growth and curiosity about the environment. We will continue to enhance our engaging displays and experiences to deepen understanding and interest in water, which is so fundamental to our daily lives."
