MOL Partners with JERA for Low-Carbon Ammonia Transport Fleet Agreement

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has recently announced a significant agreement with JERA regarding the chartering of two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) for the transportation of low-carbon ammonia. This partnership represents a crucial milestone in Japan's efforts to achieve large-scale low-carbon ammonia transport and is set to facilitate the delivery of ammonia produced at the Blue Point facility in Louisiana, USA, to JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Station located in Aichi Prefecture.

The collaboration between MOL and JERA began in November 2022, focusing on the logistics of ammonia as a fuel source. This latest agreement builds upon the fruitful discussions that have developed over the past year and aims to establish a commercial-scale value chain for low-carbon ammonia, paving the way for a cleaner energy future.

Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a vital component in the transition to sustainable energy sources. Its applications range from serving as a raw material for fertilizers and chemicals to functioning as a clean energy source without carbon emissions when burned. Moreover, ammonia's potential use as a hydrogen carrier positions it as a versatile solution for decarbonization across multiple industries, from power generation to maritime transportation. As such, a significant increase in demand for ammonia is expected in the coming years.

MOL is committed to its environmental strategy outlined in its management plan ‘BLUE ACTION 2035.’ This initiative prioritizes achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and places a strong emphasis on sustainable practices. By enhancing its capabilities in the safe and efficient transport of ammonia, MOL aims to take an active role in developing a comprehensive value chain that supports the anticipated demand for ammonia as a fuel source, contributing to a decarbonized society.

Drawing from its experience as one of the world's leading shipping companies, MOL continues to evolve, expanding its portfolio of social infrastructure projects and services that respond to a diverse array of customer needs. The company is poised to transform into a global infrastructure provider, playing a key role in supporting communities and fostering a prosperous future for all stakeholders involved. This partnership not only underlines MOL's commitment to environmental sustainability but also exemplifies the company's ongoing innovation in logistics and energy solutions.

In summary, the cooperation between MOL and JERA marks a pivotal advancement in the journey toward large-scale low-carbon ammonia use, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing climate change and promoting a sustainable energy transition. As this project progresses, the impact on Japan's energy landscape and beyond is anticipated to be substantial, setting a precedent for future initiatives in green energy logistics.
