Cereals Canada Releases Its 2025 New Wheat Crop Report
Cereals Canada recently announced the publication of its annual New Wheat Crop Report, providing vital insights to both international and domestic consumers of Canadian wheat. This year's findings will help prepare stakeholders for what can be expected from the 2025 wheat production, especially in terms of quality and functionality of the end products.
Dean Dias, the CEO of Cereals Canada, expressed confidence in Canada’s wheat production, stating, "Canada has produced another high-quality wheat crop with good functionality." He further indicated that the country is expected to retain its position as the third largest wheat exporter while being the leading provider of high-quality, high-protein wheat globally. The report anticipates that around 27.4 million tonnes of wheat will reach over eighty international markets in the 2025-2026 period, delivering the quality and protein content expected by customers.
In terms of production statistics, Canadian farmers harvested 36.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2025, with the predominant grades being No. 1 or No. 2. Although growers faced varied conditions during the season across the Prairies, timely rainfall in mid-summer resulted in yields that were above the average. In Eastern Canada, ideal weather conditions positively impacted the growth of winter wheat, leading to strong yields and excellent quality. Moreover, the protein content of this year's wheat was on par with traditional averages, while all classes of wheat showcased good test weights. Notably, higher than normal thousand kernel weights were observed across all Western composites.
As part of its outreach initiative for the new crop, Cereals Canada will engage with twenty-nine countries that collectively purchased $8.2 billion worth of Canadian wheat in 2024. Detailed technical data about the 2025 wheat crop will be shared in two customer webinars scheduled for November 18 and 19. For the first time, data from Eastern wheat classes will be included within the New Crop Report, thanks to a partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario.
Elaine Sopiwnyk, the Vice President of Technical Services at Cereals Canada, emphasized the importance of this year's report, stating, "This was a milestone year for Cereals Canada. Having the opportunity to analyze wheat from across the country broadened the expertise of our technical team and streamlined the process of preparing this year's New Wheat Crop Report."
The annual report is compiled in collaboration with the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), value chain participants, and provincial grower commissions. During harvest season, Cereals Canada coordinated with exporters and Grain Farmers of Ontario to collect representative samples from notable wheat varieties, including Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS), Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD), and Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter (CESRW) from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
