Liz Hershfield Appointed Executive Director of Cotton Council International to Boost Sustainable Fashion

On May 2, 2025, Liz Hershfield, an established name in the fashion industry and a recognized expert in sustainability, was appointed as the Executive Director of Cotton Council International (CCI), the export promotion branch of the National Cotton Council of America (NCC). She takes over the role from Bruce Atherley, who retired at the end of March. This move is set against the backdrop of increasingly pressing challenges in global cotton markets, emphasizing the need for innovative leadership and strategic action.

President and CEO of NCC, Gary Adams, expressed confidence in Hershfield’s appointment, emphasizing the importance of strong leadership in keeping American cotton competitive. Hershfield’s expertise lies in sustainability, global sourcing, product development, and comprehensive supply chain strategy. Her wealth of experience will enable CCI to elevate cotton processing through the COTTON USA™ brand and advocate for global initiatives supporting American cotton. Throughout her impressive career, Hershfield has led supply chain and sustainability initiatives for globally recognized brands, including J.Crew, Madewell, and Gap Inc. Additionally, she is the founder of Green-ish, a consultancy helping businesses navigate the complexities of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects as well as supply chain management. Her contributions to sustainable fashion have garnered her significant recognition, including the Textile Exchange Ryan Young Climate+ Award for her pioneering program on regenerative cotton.

Notably, she has also received The Direct 60 award from The Lead and has been featured in the Rivet 50 index due to her leadership in the denim industry. In her new role as Executive Director of CCI, Hershfield plans to leverage her extensive experience with American cotton and proven results in sustainability and supply chain management.
