Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Parkview Health have recently formalized a joint operating agreement aimed at improving access to high-quality pediatric healthcare for families in Fort Wayne and its surrounding areas. Through this collaboration, both institutions are focusing on expanding pediatric services, enhancing existing capabilities, and improving outcomes for children in the region.

With over 1.7 million patient visits each year across its network of hospitals and clinics, Cincinnati Children’s is recognized nationally for its pediatric expertise. Parkview Health, which operates 15 hospitals and a comprehensive network of primary care providers, aims to incorporate this expertise to better serve children.

Strengthening Community Health

This new agreement builds upon a partnership that has existed for more than 15 years, during which the two health systems have successfully worked together to enhance pediatric specialty care. The partnership will now integrate Parkview’s pediatric services with the world-renowned capabilities of Cincinnati Children’s. The joint services will encompass emergency care, inpatient treatments, and specialized services in pediatric medicine, reducing the need for patient transfers and the associated travel challenges for families.

Tony GiaQuinta, MD, who leads pediatrics at Parkview Health, expressed optimism about the benefits of this expanded partnership, noting that it will lead to better health outcomes for families across northern Indiana and northwest Ohio. “Our commitment to high-quality, accessible care is at the forefront of this initiative,” he stated, emphasizing the foundational relationship that has helped facilitate this agreement.

According to Evaline Alessandrini, MD, chief operating officer at Cincinnati Children’s, this strategic collaboration aims to significantly enhance the availability and quality of pediatric care for the community. The adjustments to the service line will ensure greater expertise in managing complex pediatric cases, as local pediatricians will have direct access to Cincinnati Children’s subspecialty resources.

Local Impact and Job Creation

One of the significant outcomes expected from this collaboration includes job creation within the local healthcare workforce. While the number of new positions has yet to be finalized, Parkview Health currently employs more than 17,500 people, including over 240 pediatric care providers. Cincinnati Children’s adds to this workforce with its own team of roughly 19,500 healthcare professionals, including specialists and surgeons renowned in the field of pediatrics.

Under this agreement, pediatricians at Parkview will benefit from additional knowledge and expertise from Cincinnati Children’s, facilitating better treatment options in the region. This partnership also continues to explore telehealth opportunities that have been in place since 2011, where Parkview specialists have been able to consult with Cincinnati Children’s experts remotely, covering various fields such as neurosurgery and rheumatology.

Future Prospects

The joint operating agreement is also poised to initiate advisory efforts toward establishing a dedicated pediatric emergency department at Parkview Regional Medical Center by 2027, further solidifying their commitment to pediatric care. As both Cincinnati Children's and Parkview Health move forward with this collaboration, the primary goal remains clear: to deliver exemplary healthcare to children and families, paving the way for healthier futures.
