The Crucial Role of Trusted Toy Brands for Safe Cyber Monday Shopping

The Safety of Shopping for Toys this Cyber Monday

As Cyber Monday approaches, families are eagerly preparing for the holiday shopping season, but with it comes the crucial task of ensuring that toys purchased are safe for children. The Toy Association™ has raised an important reminder: buying from reputable toy brands and trusted retailers is essential in providing a safe and enjoyable gift experience.

Understanding Online Toy Purchases

In a recent study, The Toy Association examined toys purchased from lesser-known e-commerce platforms, Temu and Shein. They discovered concerning safety compliance issues that could jeopardize the safety of children who use these toys. Testing conducted by a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)-accredited lab revealed alarming results; a staggering 89% of the toys sourced from these platforms failed at least one critical safety test.

The study assessed various safety factors, such as mechanical and physical safety, flammability, and the presence of harmful substances like phthalates. Furthermore, the accuracy of product information, packaging, and online listings was examined to verify that they aligned with U.S. safety regulations. Unfortunately, the findings indicated widespread non-compliance with mandatory safety standards.

Key Findings from the Study

  • - Safety Failures: 89% of toys from Temu and Shein failed to meet essential safety testing requirements, including toy labeling, age grading, and advertising information.
  • - Misleading Information: 65% of the toys had incorrect or misleading safety information at the point of sale or on product packaging, such as missing warnings or inaccurate age recommendations. This misinformation poses significant risks to consumers and their children.

Kathrin Belliveau, Chief Policy Officer of The Toy Association, noted, "When we assessed toys sold by Temu and Shein, the results were concerning. These unbranded products sidestep U.S. toy safety laws, putting children at risk. Families can shop with assurance by sticking with well-established brands and trusted retailers, whether online or locally."

Best Practices for Safe Shopping

To help families navigate the complexities of holiday shopping safely, The Toy Association encourages following the "Three R's":

1. Reputation: Choose sellers or brands that you know and trust. It's safer to click
